Just as an FYI, I placed the antenna under the rear deck (stick it up through one of the holes and put it alongside the brake light under the deck) so it is totally hidden. Works great and you don't have to use the metal plate.
NewMexicoG, do you have any pictures of the install and its location? I think I am going to do this install but want to get just a little better idea of my plan of attack.

Can anyone tell me if the 530 comes with the basic audio/video plugs or just the composite video?

I tried looking for the 520 but it seems all that is out there now is the 530 and I noticed that is said it uses composite video. That I do not think will work in our system. But at the same time I am sure it has to come with the basic audio/video plugs.

Can anyone help?

You are correct, I was was thinking "component video".

Thanks for pointing that out.

Now if I can just figure out how to hid the antenna I will be in business.

Input

My hangup is a bit different. I want to preserve the input as it is, and install a 3 way switcher before the existing input. Meaning that the existing input location would become 1 of 3 selectable inputs. The garmin would be another and be more or less permantly connected out of sight, and the 3rd might be rearview , also hidden. I know how to wire it, the holdup is finding a neat switch that fits with the interior of the car, so I can select the garmin or the rearview or the ipod video at will without reaching into that console and disconnecting one for the other.

Basically a 3 position, 6 connection switch. What is that called? 8 pole, Triple throw ? Anyone done this? What switch?

take the backseats out, and slide the magnetic antennae under the rear deck lid, out of sight

That is also a hang up of mine as well. Something switchable, but I figured once it is all installed and getting this switch afterwards will not be a big deal.

This worries me.... not that I can not and have not done this in the past. But the past has proven to me that no matter how careful one is something always get F'd up in the process. Just do not know if I am ready to jump into this without some detailed instructions, tips and pictures. Call me puss... but I do not want to play trial by error with this car.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I just wanted to ask, does this Navi give you the option to integrate the Ipod so you can view a heads up display of the songs, playlists etc..?

Then this procedure isn't for you, taking the backseat out is nothing, probably the easiest thing out of the whole procedure, because I'm sure you'll be more paranoid with the fact that you have to take out the shift ****, pop the console cover in the front, unscrewing, unplugging, cutting and splicing wires, etc...

I disagree, everything you listed is something I have no problem with doing and have done it all in the past. The point I was trying to make is I do not want to play trial and error with this car. I am reluctant to jump into this car without first knowing where are all the hidden screws and clips are. Pulling on the wrong area or using the wrong tool could lead to breaking something that cost big bucks replace. I have done several aftermarket installations on my GMC diesel truck (some of the local GM owners even call me to work on theirs) and Mini Cooper. I was able to find a lot of detailed information on both, I have so far not found much on this new car of ours.

I could be looking in all the wrong places.

here... you'll know how to use a factory service manual then .. '07 same as '08 for interior and pretty much 98% of everything else, and yes, you're looking in the wrong places. best of luck

just so i have this clear, does this mean there is no way to listen to FM radio or Sirius Satellite radio while the Garmin is running? And if not, how do you toggle back and forth (do you just hit "aux" on the screen?).

might one run a tiny amp and a pair of tweeters to be able to continue hearing the gps while the radio is still playing? , even if you can't still see it on the screen? thanks in advance...

I think the GVN53 comes with a separate speaker box you can use. If that's the case then you should be able to hear the nav directions while listening to radio/cd player provided you don't turn the music too loud to here the speakerbox. And yes you should be able to toggle between AUX and Radio
