I realize old thread.... wife mentioned some music pauses on the MusicBox so assume my 15 year old hard drive is on the way out. Need to track down that other thread where they are unlocking the drive and/or swapping.... think on one of the G37 forums.

IIRC... drive was partitioned 30GB for map/nav data and the leftover 10GB was allotted for music. No idea if unit prepares drive absent of nav data when replaced.

If the dead drive didn't matter I'd just put a GROM in it

https://gromaudio.com/store/vline/in...n-upgrade.html

Guess I will search on that option as well... not sure if 2007 is supported though... I know iPod connectivity came in 2008 so that may be an issue for the GROM unit.

I had purchased an inexpensive nav unit on ebay... it was like $35 a few months back to see what was involved with teardown of unit and if password could be removed.

Listed in G37driver are methods to remove the drive password... without removal you can't clone drive. Wife got the HDD failure message earlier this week but it started working again the next day so now need to move on replacement of the drive.

When this fails you lose basically "everything" but HVAC which a minimal version shows up after a delay. I was able to remove the password on eBay unit drive and image it with dd on my OS X box. I plan to pull my head unit out on Saturday and just swap in a newly imaged drive without my music. I want to ensure this works fine. Obviously my old 16-17 year old drive has some bad blocks now and may need to do some creative work to pull an image off that will work.

I'm gonna snag another drive from eBay if this works since PATA drives while cheap now but get really scarce in future and expensive. I'll post back how it goes this weekend. Hardest part is disassembling the nav unit outside the car.

Once I finish this then need to get my dash lighting fixed... started to lose some LEDs on the RPM area... gonna have one of the shops do it.. only a couple hundred dollars and they replace all of the LEDs.

Can you use drive clone software like Acronis? I've used it quite a few time on PC's and it works perfect.

Does it use a standard IDE or SCSI cable? If so you might be able to just clone the HDD onto an SSD. If it works then save the Acronis image file for the future in case it ever goes bad again.

You can likely use any imaging software but you have to crack the drive password lock first.
- Boot off FREEDOS cd with drive unplugged
- Enabled the extra HDD drivers / command is shown at boot
- Plug in drive
- Run command to remove password

I had to do something I wouldn't normally do... plug in parallel ATA IDE drive hot or it would lock drive before I could work with it.
This password lock has to be done with native IDE.. old laptop or desktop... USB adapter to IDE won't work according to author of other thread.

You can use USB adapters for imaging the extracted drive without issue. I also have a known working PATA SSD drive... don't assume all drives will work. That drive is listed in the thread.

I'm saving all images I have in case I ever need in future... and perhaps will play with enabling the GTR gauges as author of other thread has done.
