snow tires / wheels

I have an '07 G35S and have another winter car, but am considering buying snow tires/wheels for my G so that I can at least take it to work when there is only a little bit of snow. (I got caught out in about half an inch of snow with the summer tires and it was not fun).

What is a decent, economical winter tire and wheel package? I looked at discounttiredirect.com and tirerack.com.

Tire Rack had Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 tires for $708 for 4. Plus another ~150 each for basic wheels.

Are those tires ok? Is there something better in the snow and/or cheaper?

I can't recommend Blizzaks enough. I am running Blizzak WS50s and love em. You won't have any regrets getting LM25's, I guarantee it.

There are a few of us here running Blizzaks and we all love em.

I have Goodyear Ultra Grips and they have been great in snow. They were $128 ea. for 225/55/17, handle decent on dry pavement and have V speed rating. Wheels were around $108 ea. all at tire rack. I didnt bother with the TPMs. My G is on the road all winter.

I can't speak from experience but I can say both my mechanic and the Infiniti dealer I purchased from recommend the Blizzaks. My mechanic doesn't sell them so I believe his opinion to be unbias.

The dealership I bought my G at pushed the Blizzak WS50s also, they must have them stocked. I understand they have great snow and ice grip but at the cost of handling and the Q speed rating. Since I am not driving on unplowed, snow covered roads all the time in winter I chose the more performance oriented Goodyear Ultra Grip winter tire and am very satisfied with them. The Dunlop M3 and Michelin Alpins are in a similar category of performance winter tire as the Ultra Grips but I think are more pricey. The Ultra Grips rated best in Consumer Reports testing.

BTW this has been about the worst winter here in MA that I can remember.

It seems as if there are more potholes than ever. The city crews can't keep up with filling them this year. Its almost like driving through a slalom just to get to work some days. lol

I agree on a few points here...

The Blizzak WS-50's have been fantastic in the deep snow and icy roads, but I agree that they're not designed with dry road high speed fun in mind. In fact, the car constantly reminds me during the nicer days that these tires are not designed for 60 mph exit ramps.
And finally, yes, winter here in MA has been crazy & the potholes will swallow you whole if you let your guard down.

Yeah, my friend has the Dunlops on his 5 Series and he's happy in both snow and dry conditions.
I knew the Blizzaks were low speed rated and thought I could live with them.... and I will but when these are spent, I'll need a higher performance winter tire.

I have a G35x. I didn't get snow tires last winter since I didn't get my car until 12/31/06. My G35x did okay last winter, but I didn't have to drive as much. This winter, I got the Blizzak WS60s. They're a newer line than the WS50s. With the G35x and the Blizzak WS60, I feel invincible in heavy snow. I just drove up the East Coast. It was snowing very hard, and temperatures were in the teens. Long stretches of road weren't plowed or salted. The trip normally takes 4 hours, but took close to 6 hours to drive. My car performed very well in the snow. I could have driven faster, but the snow was pretty bad, and for most of the trip, I couldn't even see the lane markings, either because of snow or salt or both. Plus, other vehicles were driving very slow (I passed most vehicles, but even with an AWD and winter tires, switching lanes to pass cars had to be done conservatively during the winter storm).

For folks not sure about getting winter tires, they're well worth it!! My main worry now when driving through a winter storm is not my car but other vehicles around me (I HATE folks who tail gate, even in inclement winter storm weather!!!).
