Whats That Stud

On the front hub that looks like a wheel stud? Yesterday we almost thought we had a problem when it was time to mount my new rims. My heart pretty much came to a stop, then the guy realized that it looks like it can be removed, he tried and it came off. It was just a bolt with a, I'd say 1/2 spacer.

Obviously it works in conjunction with the stock wheel but what did it do, and is there any long term effect in removing it?

It's just a bolt to keep you from accidentally installing the front wheels in the back. That hole in the rotor is for the parking brake adjustment on the the rear. If there is no hole, then you can't put the front on the rear. If you don't allow idiots to try and rotate your tires, you don't need it. Not sure if it affects the balance of the rotor though when you take it off - technically you just made that part of the rotor lighter and not the rest. I left mine on for now when I put my new rotors on.

Ok thanks. It's however not on the rotor but on the hub, and it's only on the front. Your reason makes sense. How did you get new rims on the front without taking that off?

yes true, my aftermarket rotors are all one piece (stock too for me). I'm still running stock sport 18" wheels, so it fits on as it should. You can try taking it off, it prolly won't make a diff, if you get shaking on the front wheels, then you might just put a shorter bolt on it so your rims fit and the balance is the same.

When you mean hub you mean the rotor hat? or behind the rotor? If you mean something behind the rotor(and hat), then I think we're talking abut two difference things.

Like one of the previous members posted the stud is in the hub so the front and rear wheels don't get switched.
No effect at all except you can't run aftermarket wheels with the stud on, vice grips and a few turns and it's gone forever.

^ Ok thanks all. I got it off yesterday to mount my AM rims, I just kept thinking is this something important. All resolved now though. Rolling on new wheel, though small (lol)

Yeah, as everyone has said, it won't hurt anything to remove it. I always thought that it would really only prevent mounting the rear wheels on the front though; how would it prevent mounting fronts wheels on the rears?

Obviously, if you only had one set of original wheels, it would serve to help you figure out you screwed up, but theoretically you could mount a set of four fronts couldn't you?
