Are Bushings difficult to replace on your own?

Hello, I recently bought a 2007 G35 Sedan with the Journey Trim. I was told by a mechanic that the car would need work done to the steering rack and pinion, as well as replacing the front lower control arm bushings, and the sway bar bushings. The Shop estimated about 1000 dollars to rebuild/replace the leaking rack and pinion but I was wondering if I should just have them do the bushings as well, or would it be easy to do it on my own? Power Steering fluid has also been leaking would that be related to the rack and pinion leak?
Thank you!

The rack and pinion is how your car steers, it uses power steering fluid. So if your rack is leaking, then yes, that would be why you are leaking power steering fluid.

Depending on your skill level, bushings can be very easy, or very difficult. They need to be pressed out or cut out and then new ones pressed in. This requires a press of some type, or making a threaded rod setup with spacers and tubing to draw the old ones out and new ones in. If you go to Energy suspension polyurethane bushings you can cut the old out and install the new ones with out a press, but they are a Performance upgrade and will be noisier and not as “comfortable” as stock rubber bushings.

If it’s $1K for just the rack that seems like a lot. That’s not a terrible job to do.

You’ll need a press for some and to pull some. It’s good work. Great for the chassis after it’s done.
