I just did this on my 1st gen 2005 coupe. I just had to remove the clutch pedal assembly to reach the spring. Wasn't too hard to do and took me less than 30 mins to do everything. I wish I knew about this when I bought the car a few years ago. Clutch feel is now very consistent and more comfortable to drive.

Been lurking around here since I got my G a couple months ago. First mod was this clutch fix, and I can definitively say I am in LOVE with my G again (well I still was but just more so now!)

Holy crap, just did this mod, my impressions:

1) I forgot what a normal clutch feels like! I haven't driven another manual car in the 6 months that I've had the G and I must say, wow, I forgot how ridiculously weird this car's clutch is and trust me, 95% of the learning curve for this car is from THAT DAMN SPRING. I removed it, and I'm never putting it back in unless I sell the car, even then maybe not, no future owner would want it I don't think.

2) Much smoother shifts, although i thought I was pretty much perfect before, it was only as good as one can be with that damn spring on there

3) Quieter clutch, I just mean the internal pedal noise, less clicks and smacks and stuff when rowing through the gears, just my impression

Best driveability mod I've done, so pumped right now!

 

Another Great DIY!!! thank you very much! one suggestion though, I found without the complete assembly the clutch arm feels little unstable (maybe just me) but I end up just remove the heavy load spring off and put the hydronic looking arm back (without the big spring) and it seem to be much stabler with less movement (left and right) beside having something there makes it look more original, so when the time comes to do service a the dealer... they will not freak out haha

 

I hadn't noticed that mine was less stable, but it's possible.

There is no instability in my clutch pedal. I have to say that in conjunction with Clutch Fix #1, these are the greatest mods I have!

 

Same here, mine is fine.
I didn't find the sprng holder did anything by itself.

I think it would sell big time.
I know I would have taken a good hard look at it.
I think the only thing that would have held me back is lack of .....(you know)

If they had a 6MT, chances are there would be more mod parts available too.

Just did this mod to my G and I've got to say, awesome job to the person responsible for coming up with it! This was my only complaint about my car and now it's GONE, thanks guys!

 

Two things.

1) Not sure if I just missed this in this thread, but what is the point of this spring. If you can just take it out and everything is improved, why was it there in the first place?

2) regarding the Manual X, when I first looked at the G back in 2004, I asked the dealer why they didn't have one. His answer, and he was serious, was that the AWD system that Infiniti uses is too advanced technology-wise that it's best mated with a computer controlled transmission. The probability of screwing it up with a driver-controlled manual was just too high.

This was his actual response. Who knows what their reasoning now is though? I definitely would of held out for a xS 6MT if they made one.

 

Totally agree, for what reason did Infiniti develop a worthless clutch spring, anyone's guess. And to not offer AWD with manual transmission, what a lame excuse from this clueless dealer. Most drivers with AWD would prefer to have 6mt especially if driven in icy/snowy climates. Infiniti, are you listening?

 

I just finished doing both clutch DIYs and after driving around the block I felt like I have never driven a stick before. I am so excited to go back out onto the road tomorrow. I just want to clarify a few things during the fixes. How far should the activation button be pressed in and is it only when the activation button is fully depressed does the car start to move foward? I ask that because I feel that the travel has become too short and might interfere with shifting. Anyways thanks Intgr8r for the two DIYs.
