I can get my oil and filter changed at Infiniti for $40 or so. I'm wondering if I will get better performance from some other type of oil though?

Probably not better performance, but you could save yourself some money and DIY. Filter plus full synthetic should run you 30 bucks or less if you catch it on sale.

assuming it takes the same oil as my 06 g35x, i just bought a 5qt jug of mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic at wmt for $22. that plus $8 for a filter & crush washer, that's $30 spent on parts... so is it worth doing it yourself to save $10 or just pay the dealer to do everything for $40?

(btw i got the filter down to $7 after ordering a large number from fleetfilter since i plan on doing an oil change every 2 months)

Hmm...the reason I asked about better performance is that the oil at Infiniti is only part synthetic. I've never changed my own oil before and I just got this car. I also have little time except for occasional weekends (during which I would definitely be cool with doing an oil change). I'm just worried because I don't want to screw up my car hehe.

I bought a bunch of 5W-30 Mobil1, which ended up being ~$12 for a 5 quart jug after a rebate promotion and half a dozen WIX filters from Rockauto.com (ended up paying less than $6 per filter shipped).

I could DIY oil but don't have ramps or, access to a private garage or desire to go through with it. I bring my own oil/filter and $15 to my mechanic for labor to change it every 5-6K + tires get rotated at the same time. This ends up being close to what dealer would charge me for an oil change, but Mobil1 + WIX > OEM oil + filter.

Prior to Mobil1, I was using Pennzoil Platinum but any brand name synthetic will do well in our cars. Oil probably hold up past 7,500 miles but would not recommend going much past 5K (limitation of the filter, not the synthetic oil). Some on the board have done oil analysis, I haven't but used their interval feedback to establish my own. I mainly stuck to the recommended 5-w30, but could have gone with 0-w40. Use a quality filter: WIX, Mobil1, Purolator PureONE, Amsoil and OEM Nissan are all good options

Hey guys, is this the Amsoil everyone is reccomending?
http://www.amsoil.com/catalog.aspx?GroupID=174

Also, how many quarts fit in the G35? I guess it'sd better to fully replace the current oil instead of mixing?

Is there a cheaper place to get this?

^^ That stuff is fine, you can sometimes pick it up on sale at an auto store but your best bet may be to get a Preferred Customer membership online there; that will get you dealer pricing which is at least 20% below retail. You can also get quality Wix or (obviously) Amsoil filters online there, not to mention the other synth fluids you need for things like diff oil changes.

Sorry for the insane amount of noob questions, but Advanceautoparts has a sale on mobil 1 EP oil where I can get 5 qts of the EP synthetic + the mobil 1 filter for my car for $30 (possibly $25 if I can make use of the coupon).

I'm thinking I might get this. Do you guys think this oil is as good or close to the amsoil? I plan on probably swapping it out in less than 6000 miles anyway just to be safe.

Also, is that filter comparable to the Wix? I want to make sure I treat my car right.

Final question of the day--is 5 qts enough for the oil change? I'm not sure how long the oil in my car has been there--it would be nice to get it completely replaced (is that standard?). Not sure how manyqts I need. And if it's less than 5, it would be nice to know so I don't give an extra bottle to my mechanic lol. Thanks!

I think a it's 5 1/4, but then I never really bothered to replace it myself. $25-30 with 5 quarts is a good deal. Mobil 1 is a good filter, but I would replace it every 6K just in case.

So I dropped in some mobil 1 EP and the filter today at the shop. Also got balancing and rotation done.

I needed it inspected and they made me replace the rear brake pads for $135 .

By the way, when I got the car back, it had almost 4 miles on it more than when I left it...is this normal or did they take it for a joy ride?

Finally, it seems to drive a lot smoother immediately after I took it out of the lot. It's probably placebo effect, right? No way oil can do that much...unless the old oil really wasn't replaced for a while? It's just that it felt stressed when accelerating recently, but after the oil change it feels much better. I'm probably just hallucinating...

That's probably standard procedure considering they just worked on the brakes and they wanted to make sure the brakes worked.

I once took my car to the dealership for a a detail and a coolant flush and they put abt 5 miles on the car Im wondering the same thing. I have an aftermarket exhaust too so im guessing those sob's at bermans were were juicing my baby . but as for the oil change I felt it way smoother too. I had previously done a oil change but it didnt feel as smooth as it did this time.
I think they kept my oil and used their own the first time because I accidentaly bought 5 bottles of oil when the car requires about 5 nd a half and they did not tell me I was short a bottle or nothing.
