VLSD or KAZZ for 5AT?
VLSD or KAZZ for 5AT?
Can one purchase the VLSD off a G35S and switch it out with my non-sport Differential with 5AT? On the scale, where does this job fit in the 1-5 wrench difficulty?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Wow... i would say a 7? are you talking about replacing the entire housing or just the Ring and Pinon with the LSD inside? if so you would basically be talking about pulling the entire rear end apart and having to re shim the ring and pinion etc etc.. it may be a different story if you were to find a complete rear end off of a Sport and swap axles and everything.
if you swap the entire diff with the housing then I would assume it's a direct fit. However, swapping the internals (I think the ring and pinion are the same for the VLSD and open diff versions) then you would probably need to re-shim it as Austin said.
Do you have a question on the Kaaz LSD?

The reason I'm even interested is an instructor at a driving school was slammin' the fact my G35 didn't have ANY type of LSD (something about how his BMW was so much better in the corners). I left it at that until I saw an ad for Kaaz LSD. I enquired, and in the meantime heard about a wrecked 07 Sport....and thought, "hmmm, is this the kind of job where your unbolt a few bits, check a few bearings, hoist the new LSD and voila!, I now have power and control through the corners."
This is one of those situations where if someone asked what my goals were, I wouldn't have a good answer. I simply have an itch to make my car "better". It sounds like getting a LSD is not like getting new wheels...If I want to autocross, I should get a 6MT Sport.
Right?

As long as you get all the right parts needed from the wrecked G, then I don't think you would have any issue. Is the wrecked G a 6MT or 5AT?
BTW, tell your instructor that not all BMW's come with an LSD. My friend has a fully optioned 335i but has no LSD since BMW doesn't make one for it lol

Yeah unless your instructor drives an M3 he is talking out of his ***! The 3 series doesn't even have the option of LSD like the G35/37 does.
Also refer to a thread I started when I first got my car.

Not necessarily. Wavetrac and Quaife (sp?) make aftermarket units for the 3 and are very popular. Just because he doesn't drive an M doesn't mean he can't have a proper LSD.

I know you can get LSD aftermarket for most cars. The thing is, if the instructor is comparing a unmodded (no LSD) G35 vs. his modded (with aftermarket LSD with maybe some other suspension mods) then he is really talking out of his *** because its no longer apples to apples.
So, KAAZ emailed and said they have an LSD, but I will have to use the 6MT Ring and Pinion - I'm not sure if this is a fitment or gearing ratio issue?
I should also clarify that the Instructor does have some financial gain in pointing out the inferiority of my G35, as I have the option of renting their E30 (and if I stuck with it, which I can't, I could rent the "pro-3 racer"). And their rental cars are modded track cars, so I agree with the Demon above that we are talking Apples to Cumquats.
And I'm not judging his perceptions either, I was explaining why I started looking for an LSD. If I want to autocross, I will get a red "S" (and keep dreaming about a red 07 Nismo 350).
You know what though, I was driving home yesterday, and took the long way*. As is, without any serious mods, this car is gorgeous, really fast, luxuriously comfortable and that 11 speaker Studio on wheels is nothing short of amazing!
