5AT cruising revs

Took my G on the freeway for the first time yesterday and was irritated to see the revs holding around 3200prm for speeds of 75/80 mph.

Is this normal? Seems very high compared with my Z which was very quiet in 6th in terms of engine revs and noise at the same speed. The G is more like the piece of crap MT Impreza my wife had with a very short top gear.

yep its normal. you can look into swapping rear diff out or just changing gears. but thats about normal rpm for that speed with the 5AT

3200 is a tad bit high, but is probably within the margin of error of the OEM tach. I've noticed a decent amount of variance between the tach and my PLX gauge which pulls data from the OBDII port.

What year is your G and does it have the 3.3 gears? I know a few folks with 3.5 gears that cruise around 3200.

3200 sounds about right. If you want a lower RPM then swap out the 5AT for a 7AT from the junkyard.

Ah well, I'll just have to live with it I guess. It's an 07 G35x and I'm still wondering if trading my 350Z roadster GT was worth it...

When I first got my 08 G a couple of weeks ago, I thought my car wasn't switching from 4th to 5th on the highway since it was revving so high. My Jag was about a thousand rpm less at 70 mph. When I switched to manual mode and it showed I was in 5th gear, I realized that Infiniti takes the HR (high rev) letters they place after the engine number seriously. I get 25.4 mpg on the highway though so it's fine with me.

^ That's pretty good - I'm getting about 24 highway @ 5000ft.

Has anyone done that 7AT swap? Is it from an earlier Infinity?

the 7AT is used on the 09+ G's and other Infinitis and Nissans. I don't know what it takes for a full swap but it should be easier and cheaper than an auto to manual swap.

You should still be getting 17-18 MPG combined or better unless you are driving like a maniac.
