MOD: Make your X 100% RWD. NO JOKE

DISCLAMER: I JUST WANTED TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE ON A MOD I DO FIND. I WON'T BE REPONSIBLE TO ANY DAMAGE MADE TO YOUR CAR. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK

I know that some people would say if you wanted a RWD G, why did you bought a AWD, but this is just for those would sometimes want their G in 100% RWD for fun.

The AWD control unit is the brain of our X. I discovered by reading the factory service manual that if the car discover a malfunction of the AWD control unit, it goes into a "SAFE mode" which mean that the car will be powered exclusively by the rear wheels until it read that the AWD module is in a "normal condition". Safe mode also mean that the front selonoid clutch will be totally disengaged for ever until a "normal condition" is again detected.

The only thing you will notice: the AWD light is illuminated in the dash to tell you that the AWD is not working as it is supposed to be.

The awd control unit is located behind the glove box. See picture here (taken with my ipod sorry for the quality)

By unpluging the connector, you will enter into the "safe mode" because no current is detected to the awd module.

What I did is to remove the power wire (+12v orange) that goes there and insert a spare wire (blue in this pic):

I have connected a switch between both. So I can power ON and OFF the awd module when I want. But I only do this when the car is not running.
Make sure to isolate the orange so it won't blow a fuse if it touch the chassis.

It's not a hard mod, but it's kind of tricky to remove the wire from the connector. If you don't mind, you can just cut the orange wire and put a switch between both.

Result: the car is alway's RWD in any condition. The VDC still work well.
It gave the same result than the previous gen of G35x. Those past Gen had a fuse we could remove in driver kick panel, but the last gen doesn't have this fuse.

Interesting...

Can you tell a difference?

Are you able to light up the rear tires and do burn outs?

Well with the AUTO tranny it can be difficult to do big burn outs of course. But on a closed circuit (of course) it can be fun with a wet pavement

Anyone on here a Nissan/Infiniti tech that can verify that this does indeed disengage the front diff? Cool idea and this would be a good way to save wear and tear on our AWD system when running a staggered setup and/or boost. I have a staggered setup (just barely so i don't feel that it's creating a lot of wear but overtime even the slight disparity in tire size-because of my larger width rear wheels-could affect the AWD system) and it would be nice to know that 8 months or so out of the year i could avoid additional wear. Thanks for sharing!
