Lower grill...anybody ever tried anything?

I know that there isn't much option for bumpers on the sedan yet. Has anybody tried to do anything else with what we have? I can't stand the fake black mesh looking plastic in the lower grill. I would love to pull that fake plastic out, and wire in some real black sport mesh from the inside of the bumper. Even just take it out to see how it looked open. That black plastic is seriously the one thing on this car that I think looks extremely cheap.

Has anybody ever got in there and/or tried anything to change around the stock bumper?

Bump...and some info.

I was trying to check this out more today, and I think the plastic inserts are actually molded into the bumper themselves. I realized its a lot more work than I'm ready to actually get behind them, but just from feeling around I don't think they are bolted or anything, but truly a single piece that would need to be cut out.

Can anybody confirm?

Same as the coupe front bumper. The lower grille mesh is integrated into the bumper itself. You can cut it out with a Dremel and replace with CustomAutoMesh or any metal mesh you choose. Like this...

I have been thinking about this for some time myself. It appears that you have a Journey, like I do. I've thought about making a fiberglass insert to replace the fake plastic mesh. The insert would blend into the lines of the original bumper and I'd probably create an inlet which would have a mesh backing. I'm thinking it would be a color matched with a brake cooling duct (probably non fuctional) and an opening for a flush set of small round driving lights. My Journey has an empty selector switch location between my heated seat swtiches, that would be an ideal spot to mount a on/off switch for the lights. I think this would completely change the look of the front bumper for the better, then add a nismo lip and I think it would look great.

I've also been curious it the plastic inserts are molded in. If they are it requires a good masking job when a body shop repairs a front bumper. I've got to imagine they would pop out some how, but they appear to be molded in. ??

EWG35 - yes, I do have the Journey. I don't think the mesh on the Sport looks bad, because I think its actual mesh. The journey is this cheap plastic that is molded to look like mesh and just looks cheap imo.
