Moving to LA, how's the scene?

Hey, I'm Fabian, I'm an active member from Miami, FL. I'm looking to move to LA and wanted to know about the scene. I love the car scene, but also the party scene (being 25, single, used to be into the frat scene in college, etc).

Anyone point me in the right direction? I heard Santa Monica/Venice Beach was pretty cool... I'm planning to fly in to check it out this April 15-18 2004, any meets goin on then? (I obviously won't have my car, but my rental'll represent, ha ha ha) Also, people social out there? like house parties or anything? Any info would greatly be appreciated since I know NO ONE out there, but I'm down for anything =)

Thanks, Fabian

Hey i'll be glad to help you out a little bit. I'll PM you a little about Los Angeles one day when i'm not as tired. I'm a 21 yr old college student, raised here, so I know the party and car scene well.

If you can, try to make it out between Thursday and Sunday. Thusdays there is always a big meet with usually 300+ cars (not exagerating). A lot are bagged SUVS and trucks, but there are a lot of drifters and street racers too. Thursdays are also good to check out Irwindale, Friday is good to check out LACR, saturday also. Sundays there are small car meets all throughout L.A. (weekly), and canyon runs all weekend too.

Azn pretty much got the car thing down. But if you want to party every FRI, SAT night on sunset blvd is pure madness. Gridlock traffic and everyone trying to get to a club. LOL its pretty crazy. All the fine chicks come out at that time and its a wonderful sight.

BTW Azn where is the meet on thursday night.

Welcome to LA!! The only bad part about the nightlife here is that you probably have to drive at least 20 min to get anywhere unless you can afford to live near the hot areas. Dont mess with the police and DUI's.. They are pretty strict about it.. I don’t know how it is in Miami, but here they close the bars early!!! Some close around 1:15 and all will stop selling firewater at 2 including liquor stores.. anyways..

here is some hotspots that I like:
Old Town Pasadena - Q's, Jakes, Moose's, McMurphy's, Yard House, Bodega Bay wine bar,

Hollywood/Sunset - Myiagis, Sunset Room(great place), Conga Room (jlo's club), cat & the Fiddle, Ivar, there is also tons of great small bars and clubs – Century Club

Santa Monica/West LA - Barcopa, The Room, El Carmen, Monsoons, Zanzibar, The Canal Club, 3rd street prominade

Long Beach (downtown pine street) - Mariposa's, Yard House, Cohiba's, Mums, and also a bunch of great small bars and clubs (good to go in summer).

Downtown Los Angeles: Grand Avenue, The Mayan (good with a group, gets crowded), Stock Exchange, The Standard (has a great roof top bar right in downtown!!)

There is also Hermosa Beach, but it is usually really crowded. City Walk is good too, but it sometimes closes early and parking is $$ Anyways.... I don’t know any places in Orange County other than the Irvine Spectrum, which is like CityWalk and it is far from LA. Hope this helps! There is still so many places that I need to go drink at! How is the scene in Miami? I want to go there this year for new years, I heard that it is off the hook!

Check out this link.. it has everything and is accurate http://losangeles.citysearch.com/

Re: Moving to LA, how's the scene?

Sweet, thanks guys KEEP THE INFO COMING!!!

I'm gonna print all this up for when I go visit next month.

AznIceRckt, I'll look forward to what u have to say when u get the chance.

My plan is to make it April 15-18 (Thurs. to Sun.) so I get a feel of what daily life is like, and then of course the weekends. I love all car scenes (used to have a 400hp GSX showcar) but now have a cruiser cuz cops are ridiculous here about racing (many deaths).

sgvdvr, wow, great info... I think the main reason I'm leaning towards Santa Monica area is cuz its close?? to USC and UCLA. I love house parties, and if you've been in college, you are too. BTW: sgvdvr, I have the same degree you're getting. I have a couple years experience under my belt (mostly VB.NET programming/Database administration/IT Management) now, how are JOBS there?

Miami is great, clubs vary in closing time, anywhere from 4am to 12noon the next day. But when I lived in Orlando, clubs closed at 2am, but that just made the after-parties better, god I miss those. =) Miami is eyecandy-insanity... everything from Playboy models to Murcielago's to spotting Jay-Z at a club. Women are pretty stuck up though, so it's good to know people.

Rob_G35, yeah, I heard about Sunset Blvd. Is it hard to meet people in that madness?

Thanks, guys, Fabian
BTW: I know ABSOLUTELY NOBODY out there (not even a friend of a friend), so I'm trying to get as much info as I can.

Re: Moving to LA, how's the scene?

You'll find plenty of house parties at usc or ucla, you will probably find people who love chill, that is called being a player or confident!! My gf goes to ucla law now, so im house paried out.. I know what you mean though... booze everywhere!! There is a lot of upper level jobs availble rather than entry level, but it sounds if you already have experience...there is ALOT OF IT COMPETITION HERE!!!! There is alot of skilled people here and a few jobs, I think there is alot of jobs compared to other areas of the nation such as San Jose, San Fransisco, and Silicon Valley. I recently applied for a systems analyst job at the City of Pico Rivera, when I went to take the placement test, there was over 90 people taking the test!!! I thought it was easy, but even if they pick the top 5%, that could still be about 15-20 people. You might want to check out the defense sector here for jobs, I know that Boeing (orange county/long beach/anaheim, Huntington Beach) and Northrup Grumman (century city, El Segundo, which is close to santa monica) are hiring because of the all the terrorist business. Another good place to look is in Irvine/Tustin/anaheim. There is lots of jobs there, but the drive from Santa Monica to Irvine on the 405 is HORRENDOUS!!! it is about 35 mi which will take 1.5 hrs on a good day... and the milage will KILL your G. Keep the drive in mind when you move here..Try looking in Downtown LA and Pasadena, alot of large companies are moving back there... they are also building lots of lofts and apts there..they look nice.. Let me know if you have ?s

I wouldn't agree to this really. I work for Northrop Grumman. We make a lot of neat things, but the business is doing well because of defense contracts not entirely related to terrorism. Historically when we go to war it leaves less money to spend on shiny new toys. Defense is defantely a way to go- great benefits and everything although job security isn't quite what you would get if you ahd a nice cushy IT job somewhere. Competition down here is no where near San Jose/San Fran- I just moved from there...

I chose Hermosa Beach because the location is ideal for me. The night life is more relaxed than the pretentious hollywood crowd. It is close enough to everything fun and feels pretty central for me. I have LAX to the north, beaches a few blocks west, Santa Monica further north, LB south, and tons of young people all around me. One thing is for sure- it is really easy to meet people down here.

Sunset is fun. It is nothing like east coast places in NJ/NY. There are tons of people, but the anonymity of it makes it a lot of fun sometimes.

Here is a great web page Iused when first moving down here:

good luck and let us know when you are in town...

1 thing to remember:

1) USC is in the GHEEEEEETTOOOOOOOO. UCLA is next to beverly hills (making your G essentially a pinto compaired to all the nice cars a thief might steal). I seriously drive my roomates toyota tercel when I go to USC cause I would never stop worrying about my car parked anywhere near it.

HA HA HA...

You guys are funny. I like how you said that Rob_G35, "cruizin in a nice car.... like a..... G" Yeah, I guess you could qualify it as so.

Funny, justICE, Yeah, my car is a Pinto, here in S. Florida too with all these sick-*** cars on 22s. That's hilarious...

Yeah, I will definitely let u guys know when I'm in town, so I don't wander off into some creeped-out neighborhood in my hi-performance rental. ha ha

I'm thinking I'll fly into LAX, then drive to
Hermosa Beach for a night, then
Santa Monica, then
West Hollywood/Beverly Hills/West LA

I want to find the right environment to look for a job. Interesting what you said Aquinas, "There are tons of people, but the anonymity of it makes it a lot of fun sometimes" ... because anonymity is great sometimes cuz its new people, but on the downside, you never run into the same person twice, so u never really get to know anyone...

I just know I want to get to know the area, and possibly interview at some places... I don't think I could do government-type stuff. I do a lot of edgy stuff, (I do programming/DB admin, but its from the college of Business)...

Well, my flight will be April 15-18 (Thurs. morning - Sun.)

Try for a job with Toyota, Honda, or Nissan (I think all the major Asian automakers have HQ in SoCal)...

I live in Hermosa Beach and go up to Santa Moica all the time. I think your plan sounds like the right way to go about it. If you need help with anything while you are here, let me know. I could take your resume to our IT department here as well...no guarentees though.
