Tire issue with 05? help me out?

I have 05 5at with about 20k on it. The only suspension mod i have is hotchkis sway bars. For side note the front and rear is set to medium. Otherwise the car is not lowered or anything. In the last few months I noticed really bad tire wear on the inside of the front tires. It is worse on the passanger side and somewhat bad on the driver side. I think the passanger side will show metal threads in about few hundred miles.

FOr the life of me i can figure out why it would be like this out of the blue. I know that the camber was not changed on the car. Sways alone should not change parameters of camber either, but the tire wear is very severe.

Any one else had this problem? Any clue as to what can be done to fix this?

- I still have not done the 4 wheel alignement. But i doubt it will show me anything. Camber can not be changed on the front wheels anyway, so is there anything that can be done?

Do a search on tire feathering. I think pictures I posted are still on here somewhere.

Common issue and you will NOT get more than 20,000 miles out of yout tires. Sorry to say but get used to it.

I figured it out for the mileage I drive per day to be around $4.00 a day in rubber. OH well.

It is pretty common on this chassis. Both the G35 and 350z. I think this is the crux of the problem. There's a bit of caster built into the suspension. Caster will allow the wheels to "tip" inside when it is turned. This is designed so that when you turn fast in the corners, the wheels tip in to compensate for the body roll and thus keep the tires flat on the pavement. Now if there is less body roll, such as when you install sway bars or if you take corners with less speed, then there's less of a need to tip the tires in when you turn. But if we keep the same amount of caster, with less body roll, then the car will tend to ride the inside of the tires and thus add more wear on the inside corners. And it doesn't help the fact that the camber is pretty aggressive already.

I really do think our suspension was designed more for the track than the street. That's why they handle so nicely when driven aggressively.

Trust me i will get more then 20k out of them. I still have a good 5k on them. I dont know if the feathering will hold up much longer but if it wasnt for the feathering, i can easy get andother 5k out of them.

Stupid 19s.... and the price of the tires.

You can get more then 20k out of your Original tires, it just depends on various conditions (Road conditions, driving style).

I have 31k on a 05 and I still have life left in the fronts (rears were changed at 25k because of a puncture). I do need to flip the fronts tho so I can extend the life a bit more. Also I don't exactly take it easy on the tires all the time and I have put on a AutoX session on these fronts.

Frostya,

Are you on stock 19" or 18"? I am on 19" myself and could have gotten no more than 20,000 on the fronts. And all things considered, I am fairly passive.

Oh and a reputable tire shop will not rotate your fronts (even dismounting) as the tires are marked outside and inside. Just FYI.

I thnk what he ment was to swap sides. Driver to passanger and pasanger to driver. the 19s are not directional. so that can be switched from one side to another.

same thing was happening to me at 11,000 miles. dealer replaced 2 front tires under warranty, and aligned it free of charge, since the car was still in th 12,000 or less mile "adjustment period". mine were REALLY bad to the point where the road noise was unbearable. i had compained to the dealer i bought my g about this issue (at 7,500 miles), and they told me there was nothing they could/would do to fix the problem except align my car, and that i would just "have to live with it, and when they wear out get new tires, because since this is a sports car, thats what comes along with ownership. guys in porsches and ferraris have to replace tires all the time. its just part of ownership" in those EXACT words. hence i changed dealers, and at 11,500 miles i got service at a different dealer, who took care and solved my problem

I agree with your description and if you think about it, aggressive cornering will actually promote even tire wear.

I've got 9,500 miles on my tires. If I can make it to 15,000 I'll be amazed...though I do have 2 track days on them and I typically drive pretty hard, but with a treadwear of 180, what do you expect from the Bridgestones.
