Official Winter Tire Setup - Submit Yours

With winter quickly approaching, we all have winter tires on our minds. Some of you just bought some, others are thinking about it. What I wanted to do is start a thread that not only covers tires & rims, but also your experience with your winter setup. Please use the template below when replying:

I've got the 17 inch ASA JH3 wheels and Dunlop Graspic tires from tire rack. I've posted some pictures and all the information over in the BS, DG and DP wheel pics thread in the wheel and suspension forum.

Gee - I hope it snows soon so I get to use them to there full potential. Had them last winter in NY - no problem whatsoever. They perform excellent. If there are still people who think they can use the Michelin Pilots in the snow - Please prepare your obituary.

HAHAHA i almost had my obituary last winter with michelin pilot sports..

YO DONT EVEN THINK OF USING THE PILOT SPORTS WHEN ITS LOWER THAN EVEN 40F..

SORRY I HAVE CAPS ON BUT I HOPE THIS WILL SAVE SOME LIVES! I ALMOST DIED LIKE 5 TIMES LAST WINTER.. (the end)

Just put on 17" wheels & tires from Tire Rack. Tires are Dunlop M3 Winter Sport. So far only ran them on dry surface, but they are not as noiesy as the Bridgestone REO40,s they replaced. Took off my 18 REO40's (6mt) sized up the M3s to keep wheel diameter the same. We'll see.

are they usable at all in the cold? its usually in the 30's around here mid winter, i thought it was just snow/ice they had trouble with??? i know they don't warm up as well in the cold but i thought they were usable

rather not...if its a light winter it will only snow maybe 2-3 days, and never get below 20. i have no intention of leaving the house if its snowing or theres ice on the road.

plus its only a g35, not a lambo..don't get me wrong i love my g and its always clean and out of as much harm as possible, but it can handle one winter.

ideally this is my last winter any place that gets cold, so i'm trying to avoid blowing ~1500 on wheels/tires.

I had 18s for winter, Pirelli Winter 210's, and it sucked, well, it was OK for an inch of powder, but in a few inches, or ice, I couldn't move with the 18's. This year I bought stock 17 OEM off of eBay ($600 US), and plan to get the Blizzak WS50's (LM22s might not cut it for me here in Montreal, Canada)

XCELR8-

Just curious, with a stock size of 235/50 (17" OEM), why did you choose to go with 225/55, I guess for a higher sidewall right ?? How about the idea of 225/50 all around for rotation purposes??

With the harsh winters and nasty black ice I get on the toll road, I wanted the most functional setup. Narrower tires always cut thru debris better than wider tires. Snow, ice, water etc. So, I went with the narrowest combo I could for maximum traction. A wider 235 in the rear would provide a bit better handling if you live where the roads are more clear than snow covered. Many people in urban environments use the 225 and 235 combo.
You cant run the same size all around, they have to be staggered. The VDC and in rare cases the ABS wont function right (especially in evasive maneuvers) if the diameters are incorrect. In most of the packs we offer there is a 3/4 to 1" difference in front to rear diameters. The factory 18" sizes are an inch different as well. This also applies to the 350Z. :-)

Snow Handling: excellent
Ice Traction: moderate
Dry Handling: moderate
Comments/Recommendations: These tires are surprisingly quiet.
The G is still rear wheel drive and relatively light at the back end, so it won't go that well on ice. I really like the tires for what they are. Stopping and accelerating are pretty good, but the turn in is vague and the tires don't do that well in lateral g's (gotta go slower on the corners!) I would buy them again.

Price Paid: Dealer couldn't meet contract - I upgraded to 18" at cost + free tires and rims;^)

Dry Handling: (Not yet installed)
Comments/Recommendations: This was the dealer's recomendation. The tires look like they will barely fit the wheel well. 205 to cut the snow. Same size front and rear - is that really a problem or did you just make that up? I don't intend to drive the car hard in the winter.
How is the spedometer affected? I read 775 vs 786 summer.

Price Paid: $85 per tire, $15 each to mount and balance
Snow Handling: excellent
Ice Traction: moderate
Dry Handling: moderate
Comments/Recommendations: Great tire that represents a compromise between all out snow/ ice performance and dry/ wet performance. Had no problems driving in up to 3" - 4" of snow, up hills, driveways, etc. Never got stuck and many times outaccelerated SUVs and front wheel drive vehicles at intersections. Dry performance is about what I would expect from an H-rated tire. Somewhat soft feel and delayed turn in response. Would definitely buy again.
Incidentally, I was advised by the TireRack sales representative and my Infiniti service representative, that my set-up, without the stagger was perfectly fine and would not upset VDC or ABS. My personal experience was that the systems continued to do their respective jobs without incident.
