Anyone know the widest wheel/tire combo?
I have looked at wheels and I was curious if anyone has measured what the widest wheel and tire combo that could fit from and rear? I have been thinking about ordering a set of wheels and tires and selling the stock ones with 0 miles on them when the car arrives. Would a 18x9.0" with a 245/40 fit in the front and a 18x10.0" with a 275/40 fit in the rear...or could it be even bigger?

Just a comment to coupedit03....I think you need to take a course in tire/rim sizing. Aspect ratio is important. The 18" wheels on the upgrade tie option car come with 45 aspect ratio tires - 225/45 front and 245/45 rear. When you do the calculations, a 245/40 and 275/40 are the same diameters but wider section widths and the only draw back is you need a wider rim than 8.5" to handle the wider bead to be width in the 275 size. Most tire dealers know this stuff and the real "bible" is the Tire and Rim Association Manual that is published every year. There is also another concern that you should have when making tire and rim swaps about load carrying capacity. This T&R A guide helps to take the mystery out of this part of the selection process. In addition to looks, we should consider the safety of our decisions for us and others. After all we all know tires can fail (unless you've been living under a rock for the last few years) and overload and a lack of reserve load is one of the reasons. Low aspect ratio tires alone without an adequate air internal volume may not carry the load. Compare the load carrying capacity at the inflation pressure you intend to run on the tire you select to the wheel positon load indicated on the placard inside one of your vehicle's doors. The vehicle manufacturer put it their for a reason. If the load carrying capacity of the tire you selected is less than the load on the placard....my suggestion would be don't do it or keep the car as a show car that you don't drive on public streets. Of course if you don't care, its your life and the life of others.
I hope this helps to clear up some some tire/rim confusion and let yopu know to think about what you are doing before you risk your life and the lives of others by bad tire and rim choices.

Re: Anyone know the widest wheel/tire combo?
If you check the specs on the OEM Pilot Sports, a 225/45-18 is exactly the same height as a 245/40-18. A 245/45-18 is also exactly the same height as a 275/40-18. So it won't be any worse than stock. If you think the stock sidewall height is too tall, you are obviously upgrading to 19's or 20's or really screwing up your gauge readings with the wrong height tires. Remember that a shorter tire not only makes your speed lower than indicated, it makes the odometer register more miles than it is actually driven. The is never a good thing in terms of warranty or resale. A 275/40-18 is concidentally the same size as what C5 Corvettes came with stock. The benefit is about 6/10" additional tread in the front and 1" in the back without screwing up the overall final drive ratio. To step up to a 19" wheels and keep the correct final drive ratio, you would have to go with a 245/35-19 in front and a 275/35-19 in back. This still goes back to my original question as to what is the widest wheel/tire combo that will fit?

Looks like you should enroll in that course too. A 275/40/18 is 26.6 inches tall, a 245/40/18 is 25.7 inches tall, almost a full inch difference. 40% of 10.8 inches (275 millimeters converted to inches) is 4.3 inches, and that would be your sidewall height. 40% of 9.6 inches (245 millimeters converted to inches) is 3.8 inches, and that would be your sidewall height. Multiply the sidewall height by 2, then add in the rim diameter, and you have your overall wheel height. As far as safety is concerned, nothing is as unsafe as giving the wrong information...

Re: Anyone know the widest wheel/tire combo?
Your assuming all tires are exact to calculations. I think bigshooter just mistyped 245/40 instead of 245/45. If you pull the specs for Michelin Pilot Sports off either the Tirerack or Michelins website, you will find the following:
225/45ZR18 height: 25.8 revs/mile: 804
245/40ZR18 height: 25.8 revs/mile: 805
245/45ZR18 height: 26.8 revs/mile: 775
275/40ZR18 height: 26.8 revs/mile: 776
You will find that the height of the same size tire will vary by manufacturer, but as you can see that these are as close as can be by the specs.
Here is the spec page from Michelin:

Re: Anyone know the widest wheel/tire combo?
Assuming you keep the front and rear tire diameters the same, (as discussed above,) is there any reason why the VDC system on a sedan would object to different front and rear rim widths?

Re: Anyone know the widest wheel/tire combo?
This is the answer I got from the question from Tirerack. First, do not try to use a shorter tire in the rear, it messes up the traction control. There recommendations for tires is to go with a 245/40-18 in front a 275/40-18 in rear for 18" wheels and 245/35-19 in front and 275/35-19 in rear for 19" wheels, so nothing unexpected near. When they test fit wheels, SSR GT3's had the greatest number of offsets to test since they are a 3-piece monular wheel. For wheels, the maximum fittings are as follows:
front - 18x9.0" or 19x9.0" with a 31 mm offset
rear - 18x10.5" or 19x10.5" with a 43 mm offset
This is of course with the same tires as listed above.
