245/275/35 vs. 255/285/35 ?

I have a set of Volk SF Winnings on order. The specs are: 19x9.5/10.5 +19/+29. The normal set up would be 245/275/35's. However, I am entertaining the thought of getting 255/285/35's. I do not plan on lowering my car. I already have some scrapping issues at stock height.

I read a post somewhere, where a fellow member fitted the same wheels with the 255/285/35 combo with a 1" drop and experienced no rubbing issues. Could those of you with this larger combo, please chime in and comment? . . . And the rest of you wheels experts, please offer some sound advice for someone whom is not clear on this matter.

Any pics would be great. I found a thread with regard to my specific question. However, the pics were all were all in a state of disarray due to the previous site/software upgrades . . . Thanks!

I don't have a pic but here is what it boils down to.

245/275
-will have stretched look
-Diameter of the tires are with in spec.

255/285
-will have little stretched look if any.
-Loss of performance due to the diameter of the tires.
-Fat setup

Either setup will look great but if you want to decrease the gap between the fender and the tires, go with 255/285 since you are not going to lower your car

nice, cant wait for the wheels to come in.....what color did you order? I would just stick with the usual 245/275 set up.........no need to spend the extra cash, looks just as good

Thanks alot, fellas. Yeah, it was recommended by Chris at F1 to go with the 245/275 combo. Hehehe . . . I guess I should do just that and stop fighting the impulse to go fatter. I appreciate your comments. Thanks!

Oh, truplay8, I'm getting the Winnings in Mercury Silver.

It's gonna depend on which tires your get. Ones like Toyos and Nittos have thinner sidewalls, so you should go w/the wider tires. On ones with fatter sidewalls like KDW2, S03, etc... you should go w/the thinner tires

Hey andy how long ago did you order your rims, and how long is it going to take for chris at F1 to get them?

If i hadn't already ordered my body kit I'd have ordered some rims too.

You lucky bum.

Hmmm . . . Initially, I will be running the Toyo T1R's. Well, I still have some time to decide on the widths . . . But as everyone tells me, Chris at F1 is the man and knows what his stuff.

Marc, it could be anywhere from 7 to 90 days. I guess it depends on what is available and what they are producing at the time. Body kit? . . . What body kit are you getting . . . You lucky Bum? LOL . . . Actually, don't answer that question. It's just going to give me ideas.

Edit: Marc, is that Lucy Lui on your avatar? I have been meaning to ask for awhile.

Let's make a few comparisons between the stock (OEM) tires and the 245 and 255 series mentioned in the first post.

OEM Front Tire 225/40/19 Specs:
Diameter: 26.1"

245/35/19 Specs:
Diameter: 25.8 (.3 Smaller than stock)
Speedometer reading is 1.3% too fast.

255/35/19
Diameter: 26.0 (.1 Smaller than stock)
Speedometer reading is 0.2% too fast.

Speedometer reading is pretty much meaningless on the front tires, but it shows that the 255 is closer to the stock 225/40/19.

OEM Rear Tire 245/40/19 Specs
Diameter: 26.7"

275/35/19
Diameter: 26.6 (.1" smaller than stock)
Speedometer reading is 0.5% too fast.

285/35/19
Diameter: 26.9" (.2" larger than stock)
Speedometer reading is 0.5% too slow.

-----

You can see from the numbers above that the 255/35/19 is almost the perfect diameter for the front tire. It is closer to the 225/40 than the 245/35 is.

The 255 also fits a 9.5" rim better than the 245.

-----

The 275/35/19 is the closest to the OEM 245/40/19 tire by 0.1" diameter.

The 285 fits a 10.5" wide wheel better than the 275.

-----

It's not really a clear cut victory for either set of tires. Actuslly, the 255 on the front and 275 on the rear might be the best mathematical choice.

Personally, I like the look of the 255/285 combination on 9.5 and 10.5" wide wheels. I'm not much for the stretched look and it goes against most manufacturers wheel width recomendations for their tires.

i dont know why everyone is tripping about cost. they are basically the same price. i got 255 285 for my new sf challenges 9.5F and 10.5 R. The price difference is liek 30 bucks for the set of 4.

i think what you need to be concerned about is if you DO decide to drop it, you'll have to get some fender modifications.

im dropped on eibachs and i needed to cut my fender. thats the price you have to pay to go bigger thou. thats my decision and i dont regret it at all.
GO BIG OR GO HOME, thats my motto.

I think ^^that^^ looks much better than a 275 tire. Just my opinion, but I don't like the "stretched" look. Reminds me of those Nissan Sentras with the wire wheels sticking out three inches.

^^^^ Perhaps, it's time to get the baseball bat out and time to roll some fenders.
