Z1 Owners, this may be worth a try
Searching a elitecaraudio.com and saw this post regarding getting music on the HDD:
This may work. Has anyone tried it? If not I will try tonight when I get home.
just use the program alcohol 120% to make images and burn them as original copies. You can d/l a free trial here http://www.alcohol-soft.com/
when you burn the image onto cd , just select "original cd" as the disc type

Z1's will transfer "store bought" audio from CD's to its internal HDD, but not MP3's or home-made CD's.
This is an attempted work around.
The guys on avic411.com are hard at work trying to understand the file system of the Z1. One major problem is the locking that occurs during the first boot of the Z1. When you first turn on the unit, it syncs the HDD with the unit, and the HDD becomes locked. It can be unlocked for ~$50, but it will re-lock once its put back in the Z1 and booted. Then the file system isnt anything normal, but someone somehow got to access the file system using some non MS/MAC OS, but now the audio files are in a propriatary audio format that can not be converted to / from. The reason people are trying to crack this is to be able to remove the HDD from the Z1, upgrade with a bigger HDD, then send over their entire music library from their PC to the HDD.

"homemade" cd's work just fine. all you have to do is burn it as a CDDA format CD, and not MP3 format. Remember to select cd-text when burning if you want text on the songs

As far as booting a hd with security settings is fairly easy. Get yourslef a copy of knoppix & boot your pc with it. While running this self contained cd/os, you can read any type of hd ... even the z1's.
