It's not going to be as "pretty" but if your bad with directions I hear Tom Tom's are 2nd to none when it comes to navigation accuracy. I could be wrong because I have never used one but I heard this from more then a handful of people.

I think tom toms are actually second to garmin. I used cNet.com to find out reviews on the various GPS systems. I like the in-dash look, but to be honest I can't image looking down right infront of the gear stick to look at the screen. I have my Nuvi 360 on the window next to the pillar, and i can just remove it when I get out of the car (for security).

You can actually get Avic d3 cheaper than that price. Check ebay. They usually go around for $700-$800 brand new. You can get a Avic Z1 for around $1400. Z2 is just a firmware update from what i was told.

Remember that you'll also need the double DIN finisher and the AC controller which will add another $350 or so to your expected cost.

For a simple, less expensive, and portable alternative, the Garmin 2720 and the other models that share the same case fit nicely in the cubby hole above the radio. It's not as much of an installed and finished look, but it works and is removable.

The first model you picked, the D3, is at Best buy for $1000 ($200 less). I'd skip the Avic Z2 as I've hard that alot of it is unaccessable in Drive and its very hard to fool its sensors to get around that. I know nothing about the last model.

Have you looked into any of the Eclipse models?

I checked it at bb and its selling for $1200 Canadian:P....i have a germin one which ppl mentioned but other reason i wanted to get a dd is cuz my six cds are stuck in the boss unit and says "cd error" or something. so i might as well change it to dd, lucky for me i have a ipod installed otherwise i would of had no music..lolll

to be honest i never looked into Eclipse, i always liked pioneer from day one....
