My car audio upgrade story! & Questions

Well.. I dropped the car off around 10:30am.. to put in my Alpine amp, my old JL XR650CSI components, and then I decided to buy a 10 inch JL and box for sub. I also bought some Eclipse 6.5's that joepantilono(sorry bout spelling!) recommended.. I came by around 4:00pm..and they weren't close to being finished (alot of cars ahead I guess) and then I went home and came back around 8:30.. and they weren't even finished.. end of the story.. I just got home 15 mins ago (10:30pm), and only the sub, the front JLs, the Alpine Amp, the LOC are hooked up.. I'm going back on Monday to get the Eclipse Coaxials installed in the back and to finish tuning. In the meantime.. I'm running crappy bose in the back doors (I'm in shock how crappy the "bose" premium speakers look) I know they are 2 ohm.. so should I run fader full to front or will casual use through the alpine amp for the next 2 days not cause any damage?

Thanks for everyone's help guys!

front speaker install time at least 2 hours
rear 6.5" speakers install takes even more!
cos they need to make a custom spacer for the speakers
amp sub wires...
i say at least 10 hrs..with not so good on the job

supsup do you have a coupe or sedan? I hear the rear speakers in the coupe are a PITA to swap out.

Everything is wired in already.. the only thing that isn't changed is the rears need to be my Eclipse Coaxials... and then tune it a bit. It sounded pretty nice and now the volume on 15 is equivalent to what I needed 27 to hear, no joke!

t,

don't worry, my install crew had my G all day and they installed the 2 amps, the amp power wiring, the front separates and the backseat side panels. I drove the car home WITHOUT any sounds for another day. I had to take it back 2 days later and then they replaced the rear shelf , installed the LOCs, and then wired up the speakers. That took all day too! So, 2 days of install time is decent and I rather them take their time to do it right then for them to rush and mess it up.

My install crew was so good. They told me to bring my G back if I had any problems or call them anytime with any questions. I did call them a couple times while doing my dash swap and they were super nice about answering my questions.

Don't let them rush it, if they're good, it should take a couple days....

Re: My car audio upgrade story! & Questions

are you kidding me.. two hours to install front speakers in a g35.. Hello.. it should only take about 10 minutes fo both front speakers if your rushing and for the back.. its a tottally diffrent story.. if you have the recling seats it will take at least 2 hours... if you have the regular seats.. about a hour.. to install a sub.. prolly about a hour to a hour and a half.. to rewire a WHOLE car.. meaning.. running rcas from behind the radio to the amp and running new speakers wires to each speaker.. may be about another hour to a hour and a half... so it should only be a one day job...

i agree w/ joebizz. im an installer and i have done a system in a four door a few times (components in front /coax in rear, 4 channel amp, 2 channel for 3 10's, 2 LOC adapters behind radio, ran all 4 spk wires, rca's, remote wire from behind radio and 2 4gauge's from batt. ) and it only took 4-5 hrs the first time, and that was alot of time figuring out the dash disassembly

My shop did it in about 4 or 5 hours as well. good thing about them is that they finish one car at a time carefully and they are super cheap. Division R in SoCal.

I don't know exactly what model amp you are using, but a lot of 2/4 channel amps are stable down to two ohms in stereo mode (making them 4 ohm stable when bridged). You'll have to look at the specs for your amp. You can get to a normal ~4 ohms load wiring all four rear speakers in series, though. As long as the amp isn't getting too hot I wouldn't worry that much about it

I guess if you had a speaker that was just a drop in replacement, it would not take too long, but still 10 minutes is pretty fast. For most of us considering speaker replacement, it means a component set. A component set means locating a crossover and running new wires for both new drivers. Not to mention mounting both drivers. I needed to make a custom bracket to hold my tweeters in place (add another 10 minutes per side.) And since you really should be soldering/heat shrink tubing on your 4 splices, add another few minutes. And you've got to secure the crossover to the door panel as well, (hot glue gun works great for this), add another few minutes. I know the MB Quarts 6.5's I used did NOT bolt right up either. For some reason the stock hole is NOT round, so I needed some carefull planing, drilling and grinding to mount the driver mounting ring. Add another 15 minutes. While you have the door open, you may as well Dynomat the inside...add another hour, (getting the window track re-mounted is a bit of a PITA.) Over all, I'd say one skilled guy could do both the front doors in somewhere near 2.5 to 3 hours, and half that without the Dynamat. Many shops have more than one guy working at a time, and that could easily cut this job time significantly. But it's always better to have someone who knows what they are doing, and is willing to take the time to do it right.
