SAT antenna mounting question
SAT antenna mounting question
For those of you who installed their own SAT radio, how did you mount the antenna on the rear parcel shelf? I don't think the magnet alone will secure it during "spirited" driving. Ideas please!!!
Re: SAT antenna mounting question
First, which antenna are you talking about?
If it's the one that came with the OEM kit (the ugly mouse on steroids), then simply applying a piece of adhesive velcro (the hook side) to the bottom will hold it pretty good on the deck carpet.
If you buy one of the newer, smaller antennas, these can be hidden underneath the carpet, etc.

Re: SAT antenna mounting question
I second that. I trapped my Sirius "steroid mouse" with a small piece of hook velcro, it's not going anywhere. Even before I put the velcro on there it really didn't move all that much to begin with, it's pretty heavy.

Sat antenna w/spoiler!!!!!!!
if anyone has a spoiler, you can put the small XM antenna's under the spoiler and it works perfect. The antenna's will go through anything but metal. Just take the underside liner of the trunk lid off and there will be a gromet for the brake light wire of the spoiler. remove the gromet and take a pair of tin snips (metal shears). and make the hole bigger. put antenna through hole, will stay in place with the magnet on bottom. reinstall grommet in hole (yes the hole is bigger now but just do it) then silicon around gromet and hole. run wire through trunk lid and factory grommet that goes into car, reinstall panel and wala all done and no visible antenna. now that is the pimp SH@T

Re: SAT antenna mounting question
The TERK XM3 antenna is currently a stealth placement within the rear brake light housing. This location, however, does cause dropouts.

Re: SAT antenna mounting question
Does anyone know if the XM antennas and the Sirius antennas the same. I hate the steriod antenna and was wondering if the Sirius antenna that is installed on the Mercedes Benz can be used with the XM systems?
Re: SAT antenna mounting question
The XM and Sirius antennas are not the same. If you want a really small XM antenna, consider the Terk XMicro.

As Noremac pointed out, Terk offers a micro antenna that is about the size of a fifty cent piece. Can be obtained from Circuit City for $30. However, you will need a converter for the single wire antenna to our double antenna connection on the Clarion XM receiver. That converter can be obtained from http://store.myradiostore.com/blxmansp.html
It is a Blitzsafe XM-1DAS Antenna Splitter for $30.

Re: SAT antenna mounting question
Are you getting droputs more frequently? The dealer told me that antenna is a low profile antenna which may cause more dropouts than usual and the steriod antenna is better because it is high profile.
Re: SAT antenna mounting question
I have no experience with the Terk Micro Antenna, as I have not purchased it yet. Do have the Terk XM3, and it did not cause any more dropouts than the big-big Clarion antenna that came with the XM radio. The dropout problem is caused by my placement within the rear brake housing. The dropout frequency is quite infrequent and within tolerable limits.
The reason Infiniti insists on the large antenna is that it is cheaper antenna, and when you are purchasing thousands of antennas, it is a vehicle cost consideration. As the antenna size diminishes, the cost of manufacturing the item goes up.
