There are some small amps that might fit back there, but you'll have to figure out how to mount them since they won't be able to use the stock mounting holes. You could mount an MDF board using the stock holds, then mount your aftermarket amp to it, but space is pretty limited. The small ones also tend to be quite expensive and are generally Class D, which isn't ideal for good front speaker sound quality.
I was hoping to do the same thing, but having both a Class A/B and an upgraded sub in the stock location isn't realistic. You can do one or the other. Upgrade the stock 8" sub and move the new amp elsewhere or put a bigger sub somewhere else and use that space to mount the new amp.
Here are the smallest half-way decent Class D's I've found:
Cerwin Vega SX440.4 - 9.4" x 7" x 2"
Alpine PDX 4.100 or 4.150 - 10.2" x 7.6" x 2.6"
ARC Mini 125.4 - 11.6" x 5.1" x 1.7" (Class H)
I'm sure there are others, but they'll all be Class D.

1) Get Money.
2) Post a new thread of your own with a subject like... "04 Coupe, $900 to spend on sub + amp, looking for suggestions".
3) Post how much money you have and what music you listen to (don't say "everything") inside the post. Also include your experience level with installing.
4) Read responses.

im thinking about doing this also. but i might be cutting the whole a little bigger to fit a 10 in there. provided there is enough room. i havnt looked yet.
but on a side note. i THINK, not 100% sure on this. but i think that if you are going to put an aftermarket sub in the stock location you have to make sure it will even sound halfway decent running on free air. otherwise its going to be using your entire trunk as the box. and NO 8 inch sub needs that much airspace. so unless its going to sound good running on free air. it will sound terrible

if you are looking for a good IB sub, then you need to look at the t/s parameters and find a sub that has a high QTS. probably higher than .6 would be good. i'm not sure what the w3 is, but i'm pretty damn sure it's not good for that application..
just saying

The only JL 8" that meets this is the 8W7 with a QTS of .612, but then you're looking at a $325+ sub. There's also a ZR800-CW which is more of a mid-woofer, but will work in an IB setup (QTS: .662).
Good info matty.
