2006 G35x Smart Key Replacement

I'm looking to get a new key fob for my 06 G35x because the girlfriend keeps dropping the thing (seriously, I had the car for 8 years and nothing ever happened to the key... I give it to her for 1 day and it needs replacing).

Amazons points me to something which says it's compatible with the following keys
Amazon Amazon
  • FCC ID: KBRASTU15, CWTWB1U758, CWTWB1U821
  • Compatible with part numbers: 28268-C991A, 28268-ZB700, 28268-C991C, 28268-5Y701, 28268-ZE10B, 28268-8S200, 28268-ZT04B
However this key is physically different from what I have. I've got the oval-shaped smart key FCC ID KBRTN001, part number 2111B-TN001.

TBH I'm OK if the key looks different for only $14... but it has to work, of course. Does anyone know if these can be mix-and-matched or I need to keep looking for an exact replacement to my current key? I'm having trouble finding them in Canada and this might require a dealer visit.

Sounds like you have the same smart entry system I have. Having chipped keys made is simple, the smart prox remote has to be programmed from the dealer from what I have read. I bought a 05' G35x with the same system and only got 1 key with the car. I'm debating on having a new remote programmed but will probably just install a remote start system since it will be cheaper than going to the dealer for a factory remote and programming. I'm wishing my 05' was like my base model 04' G35 with the $8 remotes...

If your transponder chip in the key is still good you can just have any locksmith cut the physical key then disassemble it and swap transponders. I'm pretty hard on the plastic part of the fob and have had to use that method with multiple vehicles over the years. Some of them you swap just the transponder, others you take the whole circuit board, pretty sure Nissan i-key is the whole board but it should just pop out.

If you are adding extra keys then yes it requires programming but shop around locally because a lot of key shops have the software to reprogram the BCM.

Car: 2006 G35 Auto Coupe
Key: One Proximity fob (item 1 on the chart above) with the included mechanical key (item 2).

After hearing horror stories about the cost associated with proximity keys, I decided to buy an extra one. Unfortunately, used proximity fobs for 2003-06 cars are 5 times more expensive than new proximity fobs for 2007-13. Be that as it may, I have a fob coming in the next day or so.

However, the fob does not come with the mechanical key insert. My question is:

Can I buy an uncut mechanical key on amazon for a few bucks, or does the mechanical key with the proximity system require a transponder or chip? I ask because some of the ebay merchants note that the uncut key does not include transponder.

10x Smart Remote Insert Key Keyless Uncut Blade For Nissan Altima Infiniti 06-11 | eBay (shows how inexpensive uncut keys are)

Uncut Chipped Emergency Key Replacement for Nissan Infiniti ID46 Chip (2 Pack) | eBay (note how is says "Chipped", implying the mechanical key has a chip or special electronics)

Thoughts appreciated.

I'm almost 100% certain the mechanical key located in the 2006 is only for the door and doesn't have a transponder in the key. You should be able to visually look for the transponder on your existing key, it's usually a "square looking insert" on the plastic housing of the key.

No insert visible. I have been able to drive the car with the mechanical key and without the fob, so I'm going to have the locksmith cut a few extras.

The used proximity fob arrived yesterday, and the ebay seller included an uncut mechanical key and a nice "infiniti" key clasp, which was nice.

I'll report back after my visit to the locksmith. Hopefully the 2006 won't cause any challenges.

Shouldn't be any problems other than the cost associated with it.

Most modern handheld programmers will be able to program the key but 2006 the ECM communicates over CANBUS DDL2 K-line whereas the BCM communicates over DDL1 CAN. This may or may not be an issue depending on the handheld programmer your locksmith is using.

Just make sure to let your locksmith know it's not communicating over DDL2 but over DDL1, they may or may not know what you're talking about if they're not really into the tech but their programmer instructions will show what systems it's good for.
Sometimes the scanner will automatically switch to DDL2 since that's what it's going to find initially when they plug in and it might need to be manually switched to DDL1 to communicate with the BCM.

They will be programming your BCM to accept the key, that's where Nissan stores all the information pertaining to the key/fob.
