and yes i did get the pac unit but i have not gotten it to work yet. It is halfway connected (about 90%) the only thing missing is the power wire which we couldnt figure out at the time. Could that be a problem why the remote doesnt work?
you should be able to use both the touchscreen and the remote for the highlight function. I'm not sure why your remote is not working as I'm using the PAC ALP and my remote as well with no issues, but I'm not sure what effect a PAC that is not fully hooked up would have on the IR remote. a easy way to add that power for the PAC ALP is to just get a "ADD-A-CIRCUIT" - it's a real easy way to add a ignition switched power line- i get mine from parts express but i think autozone has them as well.

those that are using the PAC ALP.... does this allow you to use ALL of the steering wheel controls with the Kenwood? and is there any kind of delay like when using the PAC SWI-X?

I hooked up the PAC ALP unit. I need to do a little fine tuning I think , but it is handling the volume and that's the steering wheel control I use most of the time. I don't think the Kenwood unit will accept the power on/off through the steering wheel, I have that one set to 'attenuate', I use that more that power on/off anyway. 'Mode' works fine, though there's a lot of 'modes' on this unit (AM/FM/DVD/video/Sirius/external media/cd/?). The track up/down works in all the modes I can remember checking it.

Delay-wise, the volume control is not quite as responsive as the OEM unit/steering wheel control, or the control on the kenwood unit itself, but in practice I've not had any trouble getting used to it. Can't compare it to the SWI-X since I've not tried that.

I trimmed it down some, but ended up leaving it as you did, looks far better without than with. But one of my next projects might be to try and get a little artistic with some black plexiglass. I'll post pictures if I can produce anything that's not too embarrassing.

HU install looks clean. Did you inspect the IR receiver for the remote? maybe it is obstructed or something.
