New rotors- slotted vs. drilled- Opinions??
cross drilled and slotted
I put on the stillen cross drilled and slotted rotors on my brembo g35. They work great and don`t leave nearly as much break dust. Little if any.
I think ttrank is right because from what I heard that drilled rotors isn't as good as slotted. I never own one my self so I can't have more facts to back it up but I just only can say what I heard from my supra friends.
Hi all,
Sorry I haven't checked in for a while- but you guys have kept the argument spirited. Honestly thought my initial question was simple, but it's resulted in some real controversy.
Biggest fear on the drilled from what you all have written (and shown) is cracking, but for God's sake we're talking about Brembo's own product, and they're not cheap. I like the question about whether holes are actually drilled or was the rotor poured that way. Again, I have a tough time believing that Brembo wouldn't use the most reliable process. I mean, all Brembo is known for is brakes, so I can't believe they would take shortcuts. As you can tell, I'm still leaning toward the drilled...but I still have a couple of months before having to choose.

In case you were wondering...I went with the Brembo slotted sport rotors. Had them installed yesterday with OEM pads and a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's, and I know it's only one day, but my 4 year old G feels brand new. The rotors look great, and though the slots are more subtle than the drilled would have been, the brembo caliper draws your eyes to the wheel where the slots are clearly evident. Also, the rotors themselves have sort of a gold tint to them, enhancing the look even more.
I think I finally picked slotted over drilled because of brembo's own representation about potential for warpage. Feedback from all of you was helpful in confirming that drilled do come with some risk, so as usual I took what I thought to be the least risky alternative. Thanks, again, to all.
I'm going to infiniti's special early presentation (9:00AM) at the NY auto show on Friday morning to see the new coupe. They sent me an invite and I rsvp'd. Notice how they've put much nicer brake calipers on the new G. My guess is that though people complained about the cost of replacing brembos on 03/04 models, they complained more about how dull the calipers on 05-07 coupes looked not only compared to ours, but even pretenders like Acura and Cadillac. I know there are mixed feelings on the new coupe, and though I like it I'm still planning to keep my 03 CB 6MT a long time, but I sure wouldn't mind gutting my car and replacing the interior and electronics with the new stuff. Talk about the best of both worlds...

I have the StopTech slotted.
I have the StopTech slotted.
Is that why just about every exotic car there is known to mankind, have DRILLED rotors?
BMW, Mercedes, Lambo, Ferrari, Z06, Porsche... all come with drilled... surely they must know something????
I went with slotted AND drilled on my sedan...
I think problems arise when the rotors are installed improperly (they are uni-directional). You can however, install them both ways. I like the clean look of the angled back (at the top) slotted rotors, v.s. the way the Z06 rotors are installed. This tends to pull heat from inside to outside, v.s. outside to center of the rotor...
FWIW, I had aftermarket slotted AND drilled rotors on my 610bhp Lingenfelter supercharged Z06 and that was a 205 mph car (not that I EVER got close to flirting with those speeds). I never had any problems with the rotors and they worked like a charm!

track usage and street usage are very different. On the track, you will see higher temps for a sustained period of time. So just because lots of high performance street cars use drilled rotors, doesn't mean they're up to the task for the track. For that matter, I don't think any car comes with pads that are suitable for the track. I doubt stock brake pad's MOT for even those super cars with drilled rotors would be sufficient for track use. So just because you spend $200,000 on a car, doesn't mean it's track ready. It doesn't mean these cars aren't fast, but just that they could need a few tweaks to be durable and useable on the track. If both Brembo and StopTech reccomend slotted rotors over drilled for the track with no difference in cost, why not follow their reccomendation?
