When is it needed to replace struts and shocks?

My 06 G35 has 99K on it now, about to do some upgrades on the vehicle. When is it about time to replace the struts and shocks?...I believe it still has the original suspension.

If it is time...any suggestions? I'm not a track racer, just a street guy using it as a daily driver, however I like to upgrade the part if I can and if it is worth it.

Sounds like it's about time - 99k is plenty of mileage on original shocks. I went with Tokico D-Spec adjustable shocks and struts all around and have been very pleased with them.

I believe most reccomend it at 60K. I would do them by 80k miles, they are usually pretty worn by then.
At 99K yours are well past due. You will probably notice a nice improvement when you replace yours.

Wow...I wasn't expecting them to be so expensive lol! My just have to go back with OEM but I'm sure they will end up being about the same price at the dealer as aftermarket would be.

You can look into Tokico HPs, their def more affordable.
Especially from the vendors on this forum.
I just got a set matched with 350Z Tein S-Techs and love the setup.

I don't think it would matter but will putting aftermarket shocks and struts mess with my wheel clearance? I have 20in rims (staggered) all the way around. Is there a specific length I should be looking for or are they pretty much same as stock?

Here is another question for you. I just looked at the HP Tokico series and YES....way more affordable! However are these a "lesser grade" than the stock shocks and struts? I really would like to get the same or better quality and performance if I'm going to spend the money and time to replace them ya know? I don't mind spending more if I have to to do this.

Our stock struts/shocks are also made by Tokico; OEM just costs more. The Tokico HPs are a quality replacement shock, and some users think they may be slightly stiffer than stock. Their D-spec line is great if you want adjustable units for a good price.

They will not change the ride height at all.

I like the HPs a lot more than the oem struts.
My old setup was Z h-techs with oem struts
new setup is Z s-techs with G35 HPs.
It's less floaty and feels more solid.
I actually don't bottom out anymore like I did with the h techs.
Prob due to better shocks and higher spring rate.
The ride is only slightly stiffer than with the old setup.
It's great for a daily driver.

So I guess it is pretty standard to replace the springs also when you replace the shocks and struts? I just really don't want any drop in the ride...still fear the 20''s will rub if I do. Its pretty close as it is lol.

Thanks for the advice on the struts and shocks though, I think I will go with the HPs.

The springs dont wear out like the shocks. You don't need new springs, just get the shocks and struts and call it a day. Who told you that you need new springs?

Thats like changing you brake calipers everytime you change your brake pads.

If this is a a DD, get some KYB GR-2s and call it a day. 80 for the rear pair and 200 for the front pair. Done and done.

I did my rears at 93k, doing the fronts when I can get some money freed up. My pass is leaking.

It is an excellent idea to change them out. You may not notice a huge difference but your car will handle more predictably in extreme situations.

Please, replace your strut mounts and upper rear shock mounts. Another 100 for these items, but a good idea for NVH improvement.
