Our retirement property

My wife and I have been searching quite a while for an ocean front property to build a home on when closer to our retirement. We're very pleased and excited to have found something that ticks many of the boxes. It came on the market Wednesday and our offer was made sight unseen Thursday, and accepted Friday. Ocean front property is becoming more difficult to find in Nova Scotia and especially at a reasonable price. Ironically this one was owned by a couple from Thompson MB who planned to retire there. They also owned ocean front on the Strait in New Brunswick and have chosen to build there.

We took a run up yesterday for an inspection and snapped a few pics. It was a bit overcast momentarily when I took most of the pictures so I apologize for the quality.

The property is 2.3 acres in size and has 294' of shore frontage. It is located near the end of small point (6 km long) where it narrows to about 250 meters so has water views on both sides. It faces south, south east across Barrachois Harbour in Tatamagouche Bay on the Northumberland Strait and has the Cobequid Hills in the background. The Northumberland Strait is only 15-30 feet deep and has the warmest waters north of the Carolinas. It is also has favorable weather with almost no fog unlike many other parts of Nova Scotia on the Eastern and South shores. There is a marina across the harbour directly behind the chalet condos in a few pictures. The fourth photo from the end is just down the road from the Marina looking across the harbour back at Sand Point and our new property.

Wow, what a gorgeous piece of property Deane! Congratulations to both you and H, I am sure the both of you are really going to love it there. I am sure you'll love the privacy as well. Like you mentioned, the Northumberland Straight has very warm water and next to no fog whatsoever, a very good combo.

Congrats again to you both.

Thanks.

Winter access is fine. It is a government road that is maintained and plowed year round. Many other homes there are year round, while there are also many cottages on lanes along the point too. The road runs off the main shore road highway and is 5.0 km long. The first 2.6km is pavement (chip seal) and the last 2.4 km is gravel which is in very good shape. We also plan to do some wintering in southern climes.

I knew you would like the waterfront Wayne. Now I need to learning something about boating !!

Thanks Shane. It's a ways in the future before we get there but we like to plan ahead.

Wow, Deane, That looks fabulous and the climate sounds perfect for you.

I'm trying to get a bead on where that is Deane....Is it up near Miramichi Bay off N.B. or back still in N.S. near Stellarton or N. Glasgow?

Congrats to you both....

C.

Thanks Colin!

It is in Nova Scotia across from PEI between Amherst and New Glasgow about 6 km from a village called Tatamagouche. The village has a hospital, RCMP office, decent sized grocery store and liquor store, a Home Hardware, recreation center with arena, some small restaurants/pub, 2 gas stations and a small Ford dealer. It is about 30 minutes to Truro, 45 to New Glasgow and 50 to Amherst.

Wow! Great pics RBull. Makes me homesick. I used to go to Pugwash as a kid to my Uncle's. He had a nice home overlooking the North Umberland and your G is looking good.

Thanks Shilo. We looked at some property in Pugwash which is about 45km away. That's real cottage country.
