Re: Anyone got sat radio yet?

I am in Winnipeg and was thinking of Sirius since their sats are located over Canada.

Actually, so am I. I do know from a unreliable source that Sirius does work in Edmonton. I'm planning on installing it my truck first and will let you know if it works ...... or not. It will be interesting to see if it will work in the mountains on my way to BC this summer.

I read somewhere else that XM's 2 sat's are over the equator and Sirius's 3 sat's are over Canada. I cant imagine reception being too bad here.

Re: Anyone got sat radio yet?

There is no such thing as a geostationary orbit over Canada. They're all based around the equator.

But depending on the attenna configuration etc, different areas might or might not get better reception.

Actaully XM satellite positions are close to over the equator and are stationary.
Sirius satellites are in a rotating orbit over North and South America. Which means that two out of the three are in service and usaully located over the US and Canada. While the third is either near the top of Alaska or deep in South America.

I agree.. that makes sense and I looked up the Sirius constellation orbital coefficeients. High inclination polar orbits... and definitely not geostationary.

As someone who as worked with satellites (earth observation and GPS) for 10 years it is interesting to see how they have these satellites configured.

Personally, neither of these satellite systems will continue to operate effectively if one of the satellites gets hit by debris. Just not enough redundancy. That said the Sirius constellation looks like the better system for Canada.

Re: Anyone got sat radio yet?

I installed my Sat.Receiver about four weeks ago. I have read a surprising number of articles or comments suggesting that many owners aren't happy with the sound quality of the Bose system. I have to admit that I too was somewhat dissatisfied with the overall sound quality. I think that the culprit of substandard sound, that many people don't really think about, is the rarity of playing store bought CD's. Burnt CD's are well,...FREE, but generally lower quality and don't allow you to truly experience what your factory sytem has to offer. The regular radio is terrible for sound. But, the Satellite Radio option using the stock system is a different world, it is amazing!

My car came with the wiring harness already installed. The harness was located in the trunk. You have to remove the spare and then remove the plastic panel on the left side of the trunk floor to confirm whether or not your car is truly SAT ready. Even though your car may have the "SAT" button on the dash, it may not be fully set up to beneft from the plug'n'play feature.

You do need to know whether or not you car is pre-wired before you make your order. There is only one bolt to remove to get into the compartment. The harness is simply a bundle of wires connected to a plug. You will find it in the same area as the Bose amplifier that powers the 225 watts of speakers in your car.

If your car is pre-wired, you can complete the installation yourself just like I did. It took about 1.5 hours between my goofing around and tucking wires.

Once the hardware is installed, you select "SAT" on you original head unit, tune to a specified channel, call Sirius, and within 5 minutes you're up and running! It's that easy! For $12.95 a month, you will get the best selection of music channels that I have seen. I have a DSS (DirectTv) system at home and Sirius blows it away it terms of variety of channels, and the number of channels per musical genre. And by the way,...I don't work for Sirius!!! I am just so satisfied with the system.

And what's equally amazing is that Sirius provides you with a password for unlimited streaming access through their website. So you can get all of the same music in your house by hooking your computer up to your home stereo or by using a decent set of computer speakers. Either way, if you are getting ready to go out with some friends or family and you don't want to leave your house because your favorite song is on or a hot story is on CNN,...no problem,...the same jam or story is playing in your car! It's awesome!!

The sound quality varies slightly from channel to channel but all of the music channels are far superior in sound to the basic radio or burnt CD's. If your car is pre-wired, you HAVE TO have this system in your car! If your car is not pre-wired, the supplier that I bought it from has a kit that you will need to get as well to complete the installation. If it's not pre-wired, I would also recommend that you forget about doing the installation yourself and have a pro or the dealership do it for you.

Lastly, here is where I bought the system from. I ordered it from Grubbs Infiniti in Texas. I found the site on the Web. Their website is www.grubbsinfiniti.com. The service was also amazing! A gentleman by the name of Carvey is the contact who they referred me to when I called. Carvey was very helpful and patient. He answered all of my questions, delivered on every commitment to call me back or send me info via email and even personally signed a postcard advertisement for the dealership thanking me for my business. He also included a wicked Grubbs Infiniti mousepad as a gift! Believe me when I say, this is a dying breed of customer service professional!! Grubbs has restored my hope that one day, customer service just might be something that escapes extinction!!! (a little bit sarcastic...I know)

In the end, after all of the criticism that I have seen on the factory installed Bose system in this car, I have to say that they did a great job. Based on how my stereo sounds in "SAT" mode, I think they tuned the system for use with the satellite. It really sounds that much better. For those of you comtemplating upgrading parts of your system with new speakers, maybe an amp and sub, or a new head unit,...hold off. Spend the bucks on the Sat system first, try it out and I am sure that you will be happy that you did. Since I've had the system, the only time that I listen to CD's is when I am passing through a tunnel or some other obstruction. Otherwise, the selection is that good!

I hope that this helps you in making a decision about getting a system. This fully integrated system is definitely the way to go.
