Calcium/Water Spot on hood

Apparently a leaky pipe in ceiling of garage has been dripping onto hood. It has left a whitish spot that won't come off with warm water or small amount of car wax. I don't want to damage the black paint and am really surprised at how stubborn the stain is. Leak in pipe fixed but how do I safely remove the rough-feeling calcium/water stain? I would really appreciate your help.

Funny how you should talk about black. I do know of one thing that fits well with black. Imperial Hand Glaze, by 3M. I used to have a black Maxima. I used it on my spots and swirls so much, you could "shave" in its' reflection. My G Coupe is Red, so the effect isn't near the same as black. Imperial Hand Glaze does wonders for dark colored cars.

Re: Calcium/Water Spot on hood

Claybar should work, but I think the 3m would be a great follow up to make sure the clay leaves no swirling. Start with the least abrasive and work up. My suggestion is elbow grease and some cleaner wax. If a couple minutes on it don't work, then I don't even think the claybar will work. Clay is great for taking impurities OFF of a surface, not polishing into a bad spot. That's what light polish/compound is for.

For the record, 3M products are frikkin amazing!

Heres a simpler way that i use to take waterspots off of my black z, mix a solution of half water, half white distilled vinegar, and simply rub the spot with a cotton cloth, and it will take any water spots off.

Wow! You guys are great. Thanks for the advice. I will post what I used and results afterward. The distilled vinegar/water mix occurred to me also. Also thought maybe a baking soda paste might work. Will let you know!

Re: Calcium/Water Spot on hood

Hey Mooser,

Is this Imperial Glaze by 3M a wax or an after-wax treatment? I am going to have to wax my car relatively soon and I would like to use something that will get rid of the swirls in the paint as well as some slight water spots. So do I have to wax the car first with some sort of carnuba wax, then use the Imperial Glaze treatment, or just go straight to the treatment after my wash? Please advise.

Thanks

Jaime

Re: Calcium/Water Spot on hood

Hey Jaime,
The Imperial Hand Glaze contains no silicone or wax. Here's a link that may provide some help;
http://www.3m.com/automotive/

Just copy and paste on your browser. Just keep clicking until you get to glazes and polishes.
It is recommended for use by hand ( 100% cotton diapers!) to increase surface gloss and to clean up spatter or residue on all types of automotive paints. If this is what you want to try, make sure you're in shade and your hood is cool. To answer your question, I used to apply it without waxing, about 3 times a year. Good Luck!

Re: Calcium/Water Spot on hood

Used the white distilled vinegar w/ small amount of water and spots came right off (took a little while because I did not want to scratch or damage paint. By the way, it was my wife's black vehicle that had the stains. I have a week-old Desert Platinum G35 Coupe which is proving to be very easy to keep clean. I knew you guys would have the answers. Thanks again!
