What am I doing wrong!? (wax)
What am I doing wrong!? (wax)
Hey guys, I am using NXT Tech wax (liquid) on my car with. When I wax it, it is shiny, feels extremely smooth, and beads extremely well. After a month goes by tiny spider scratches appear ALL OVER the car. The only way for me to hide them is to wax again.
Also, when I wax, the sides of the car feel extremely smooth, but all the surfaces facing up (hood, roof, trunk) have a harder feel to them. When i rub the sides with the back of my hand it is just smooth and silent, but when i rub the top surfaces it is not as smooth and it makes a rough kind of rubbing sound, very strange.
(I always wash and completely dry the minute before waxing)
Any comments?
Thanks a lot
-Mike

NXT has fillers. It isn't causing the swirls, it's hiding them and as it wears off, they re-appear. To remove them you need to polish them with an abrasive polish (aka a compound), and that's a whole different can of worms. For more information on that I suggest you check out autopia-carcare.com and check they're how-to on swirls/spiderweb removal, or go into their forums and start reading, you should be done this time next year.
The most common DYI way of doing this is to buya Porter Cable dual orbit buffer, some pads, and some polishes, then get to work.
On the rough surfaces, odds are you need to clay. You probably have millions of teenytiny little contaminants bonded to your paint - they land on the horizontal surfaces, thus the kind of rough feel. Try this to make sure - run into the kitchen and get some saran wrap or a really thin sandwich bag, go back to the car and put your finger inside the saran wrap or bag and rub it (lightly!) acorss the paint. It will feel almost like sandpaper. A good clay job will get that right off. (Claying is easy, you literally buy a little square or two of clay and rub it on the paint using a little carwash+water as lubricant, the clay takes bonded contaminants right off the paint)
In closing, you have three options. 1) Wax with NXT a lot to hide the swirls, and ignore the roughness. Or 2) Read up, learn what claying and abrasive compounding is, then wash/clay/polish/wax or 3) get it detailed by a pro. If you go this route just ask around on Autopia for reputable detailers in your area - I guarantee you will find one.
Edit - one more thing. It might be, and probably is your wash routine that is causing the swirls. You might want to re-evaluate how you wash/dry your car.
Cheers.

Thanks for the fast reply, very informative, will get right on it. I will probably go with the profesional detailer because I am to worried about messing up the claying/compunding.
Thanks again,
