Question 5AT question.....

I was looking at the 5AT shift direction mod posted by Gordgee:
https://g35driver.com/forums/engine-drivetrain-forced-induction-diy/122292-5at-shifter-direction-mod.html

I feel like such an idiot asking this, but I really can't figure out how I'm supposed to get the tranny into drive with the battery disconnected and the key out. Wouldn't the security features prevent that? Anyone?

I've been meaning to maybe try this mod myself, but I'm getting used to how the Infiniti works.

Have you tried just putting it into gear and shutting off the ignition?

No, I really haven't done anything yet. I know that you can't take the key out unless the tranny is in "park", so you'd have to leave the key in the ignition when the battery is disconnected.

I just re-posted this mod for Montara, so I'm not sure of the details of how to do this. It's something I've been meaning to try as well.

I imagine you could use the transmission lock override if you wanted the key out.

I'd just turn the ignition to 'on' (don't start the car), shift it into Drive, and turn the ignition back off.

Then disconnect the battery to do the mod.

I'd also thought of using the shift lock override. I'll be trying it out this week or weekend. Let's hope there's no error codes!

no luck yet

Ok...update....

This is starting to bug me ....according to the service manual (IP-12), it's possible to move the selector lever back (presumably with the battery unattached). You at least have to in order to access the shifting mechanism and harnesses under the console. I just tried about every way I can think of, including what Gordgee mentions above, without success. It seems I can't find a way to get the shift lever into "drive" with the key out of the ignition. Either I can't get the tranny out of "park", or I can't pull the key out of the ignition. The shift lock release doesn't help any when the key isn't in the ignition.

Only way I can think of at this point is turning the key to "2", moving the lever into "drive", turning the key back to "1" (as far back as you can go with the tranny in "drive"), and then disconnecting the battery. I haven't a clue what leaving the key in the transmission while disconnecting the battery might do.

Anyone have insight?

You don't have to remove the key. Leave it in. Use the parking brake to make sure the car doesn't roll. Just turn the key as far to the left as you can. Disconnect the battery and go from there.

^^what he said

Turn on the car, foot on the break, put the shifter in D, press the foot break all the way down as far as it will go, let go of the break, then turn off the car. Done!

thanks guys...u were right that the key doesn't have to come out. i was able to put in my Mine's Racing Shift Harness...same idea as Gordgee's DIY but without having to mess with the OEM harness connector:
