Matic-D Matic-J?

After 4 1/2 years, I just noticed that the service booklet (the little one with the service/mileage columns) states to use Nissan Matic-D fluid. But the dipstick says to use Matic-J. WTF? I always thought J was the right stuff (I have a case in the garage), but now not so sure. As far as I know, the dealer has always used J during the flushes at 30 and 60K.

It's Matic-J.

Dealerships use Matic-J and so do we.

The higher into the alphabet you go, the more advanced and up to date the fluid, or oil, is. The fluids, or oils, are backwards compatible. The fluid you are using is fine.

JATCO requires the special ATF to work with their new [2002] dual lockup clutch. They refuse to warranty tranny to Nissan if they find non compliant ATF. Nissan likes to get repaid so they passed the burden on.

This ATF has a very different stick/slip curve from Dexron III e-g similiar to new Toyota/Honda.

Dexron can be modfied to closely emulate the characteristics via Lubeguard Black additive................close but not the same.

Several companies make Nissan Matic J compatable fluid. The ones that full comply are Subaru ATF-HP, Idemitsu ATF-HP, Castrol Transmax J or Pennzoil ATF-J.

Thanks. Looks like Nissan forgot to update their little book on the early cars.
