Lower Gear Ratios

Ok guys, I was at Metro Infiniti getting my 7.5k service, and i chatted with the service representative dude probably in his 50's, and he seemed to be a car enthusiast and know alot about performance parts etc....anyway i was asking him if there was any way to increase the low end on the 5AT.....he said something about changng the differential and having my gear ratios lowered for higher acceleration at the cost of top speed....he said Stillen could probably do this....
now my question..does anyone know/think this is possible because I can give a damn about going 140 Mph...i like 0-100 much more...

Re: Lower Gear Ratios

350evo.com has a rear end kit that takes the final drive ratio from 3.54 to 3.91. right now all they have is the ring and pinion set which will be out in march. as far as i understand, they will be working on an entire stock housing replacement. this will make installation a plug and play affair, and you wont have to set the gears.

Your final drive ratio is 3.35 not 3.54. What I did is upgrade to the Z's rear diff assembly so I now have 3.54. At 3000rpm I used to go at 83 mph, now it's 79 mph. That's a 5.5% difference. Upgrading to the 3.91 fdr will give you a 14.6% change - too big in my opinion.

The funny thing is that I want to go back to the lower ratio b/c of my TT setup (so that each gear lasts longer). Let me know if you are interested in a trade.

Re: Lower Gear Ratios

gurgenpb,
I'm confuse now with your T/C mod and Z's rear differencial mod. Are they the same thing? What does each do ? From your Mod list you have both mod to your G35s, what's the major differences in them and which is more reliable and cost effective?

Re: Lower Gear Ratios

m500,

The two mods are completely different - apples and oranges. The T/C sits between the engine and the tranny (were the MT's flywheel/clutch would sit). The diff is the rear differential, and I swapped in the whole "mushroom" diff assembly. The latter was to get an LSD in there, along with a shorter FDR (3.58 instead of the stock 3.35) - this gives me better ecceleration at the expense of top speed and hwy fuel mileage.

EDIT: The T/C gives you a more optimized connection between the engine and the tranny/wheels. They bring in the clearances in the T/C to provide for a more efficient linkage. Hence, more wheel HP available (in theory) and less heat/more reliability in the tranny. And the latter is very important for my upcoming TT setup.

Re: Lower Gear Ratios

gurgenpb,
If I understand it correctly the T/C mod will give me torque at lower RPM and extended thru the entire RPM range plus the benefit of better MPG. And the FDR mod will give me the almost the same with more aggressive acceleration thru out the gears but with cons of lower Top speed and Less MPG. Do I get it right now?

Re: Lower Gear Ratios

YEs on the diff,

But there is much more to the T/C. They increase the STR (torque multiplication) from 1.2 to 1.8 (hihger STR are possible with higher stalls), decrease the clearances. The idea is that you can now safely brake torque the tranny to a higher rpm (2200 is stock, and you can go up to 3000 stall). With my first 3000 stall T/C - the torque available at a 3000rpm launch was insane! You would definitely need an LSD and some really sticky rubber to take full advantage of it. I will be confirming the MPG claims soon, just give me some time to burn off the fuel in the tank in city driving.

Re: Lower Gear Ratios

So Gurgen, would your say in your opinion that it would be worth it for me to have the rear diff from the Z like you, considering i want more acceleration and im 5AT?

Re: Lower Gear Ratios

It's up to you

But it seems like it subtracted about 0.2 seconds in my 0-60 time (that's at least 0.3 int he 1/4 mile)
