Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

I just called my service advisor at West Houston Infiniti and
asked about the part number 31036-AL004. She told me that
part number is for the Transmission Control Unit it'self, not
software. I asked her if I could have the software upgraded.
She asked me to bring the car in and they would drive the car
to see if there was a problem with the shifting.....Well, since
I have added the ECU/TCU ground wires, my shifts have been
pretty quick and positive. I don't think they would consider
my 5AT to be faulty. I suspect they would not offer to upgrade
the TCU or the software. Sigh..........................What to do?

That pretty much the response that you will get from every dealer out there, with the obvious exception of certain dealers who have some diehard gearhead mechanics working there that you are close with. One dealer here in the bay area actually told a customer that upgrading the software in the TCM will "void the car's warranty". Unbelievable sh#te!

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

My dealer has those "diehard gearhead mechanics" and they are great and helpful. It's the moron in between me and them that causes me so much grief.

top 3 things I've heard from a service rep that blew my mind:

1) " What's a TSB"
2) "There is no way 1 million nissans were recalled - your internet friends are making stuff up"
3) "We apologize for blaming the pulley going out on you on your CAI"

This is only the surface!

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

I have a 2003 G35 Coupe 5AT, built around April 2003. Would the TCM upgrade make any difference?
Right now I can down shift and upshift without any problem.
I guess I am just asking if it worth the upgrade or might it be better to leave alone?
I will be getting TS to do a reflash since I have added a Greddy TT.

OH MY GOD! what an engine! Do you eat Vettes and M3s for
breakfast? Get the GroundingGear ECU/TCU ground wires.
Your shifts will probably be just as good or better than a TCU
reflash.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Damn TX, that's one of the sweetest engine bays I've seen. Nice job. You're making me want a turbo now.

Your dealer can reprogram your TCU to make it behave like a 2004.5 MM which is different than a 2003 MM on a Sedan. I'm not sure if there were differences from your 2003 Coupe or not. I know many Sedan drivers complained about Manumatic mode behavior which I don't have any of those behaviors on my 2004.5, which is smooth, crisp and does exactly what it should, when it should. FA had a good thread about these diffs but I can't seem to get on there anymore.

I think your TCU program upgrade and your ECU reflash are independent issues from one another but the best thing you could do is ask Technosquare, they will know for sure without speculating. I'd be curious to hear what they say if you find out.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Interesting. I called everythingg35.com (one of this site's sponsors) and ordered the Under Drive Pulley. They put me on hold and then the background music started up which says "Welcome to Infiniti of Scottsdale". This is a car dealer selling aftermarket performance parts... So I asked Frank (the guy who answered the phone when I called 888-216-5328) about the warrantee issues. He said that it's not a problem and they do it all the time and that this will not void any warrantee.. I think he is pulling my legs here. What do you think?

I am just surprised by the fact that the card dealership is selling performance parts that can cause a void on your warantee. I am having a second though now. I am in the SF bay area and usually take my car into Frontier Infiniti for my regular checkup and also bought my 2003.5 G35s from there.

Anyone have experience with them? The pulley is not going to be shipped till Monday so I got time to cancel my order.

pratG35,

Check page three of this thread.

From first hand experience I can say Infiniti of Scottsdale (AZ) is a mod friendly dealership as is EverythingG35.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

BIg Thanks to InfinitiTech (Vince). Today on his way home, he stopped by my work and upgraded my TCM to version same as Gurgen i.e.31036-AL004. Of course I paid him for it and got to spend an hour picking his brains. He is a really nice guy and knows his stuff about the Infiniti cars. Vince, we are glad to have you on this post.

I can't wait to go home now in an hour and see how the shifting feels. Will keep you all posed.
:-)

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Update, On the way home I can definitely tell the difference. The AT is much more willing to down shift, one time it got me by surprised when it shfted down to 3rd, from 5 going about 45 mph and I was in the meat part of the RPM right away. The old TCM just won't do it. Also shifting is more clean and crisp. I can now get a chirp on my 1st gear from dead stop with no left foot on the brake. Did not try MM yet.

I am VERY happy with this mod... Man I love my G!!!!

Cheers to Vince again ....

Next is the full "factory default" reset. Something new I just learn and guarantee to be better than the 12HR reset. Ha..

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Yeah...Vince is the man. He did mine after he did yours. I feel really lucky that he lives so close to where I work. I hope he doesn't move anytime soon.
After the TCM reprogram, I can definitely tell a big difference. Mine had the AL000 rev. (really old) and had the most annoying lag during shifts. Now all gone.
