Transmission Problem..HELP

03 5AT sedan with 59k

Ok so i was on the highway today going to class driving normal, nothing crazy or pushing the limits. Then I put it into 5th (i drive in tiptronic) and then all the sudden I feel the car almost give out, but I'm still moving. So then i give it gas and the RPM's just rev up all the way to like 6k-7k and it HARDLY gains speed. It almost felt as if it was in neutral. It picked up speed barely but it was almost unnoticiable. It doesn't happen in any other gears at all. 1-2-3-4 all pull normally, but once I go into 5th... it feels like its just reving. It almost feels like the gears are just HARDLY grabbing. Enough to keep the cars acceleration going (somewhat), but not grabbing enough to pull. Not sure if anyone has heard of this before or has happened but any help will be much appreciated. If it is too hard to understand, I will try to explain it better. Thanks

Have you tried driving it in D and seeing if the transmission will automatically shift into 5th and hold revs?

yeah I did... it seemed to do the same thing

On the way home today it didn't seem to be doing it as bad as the ride there. But I just kept it in 4th at 3k doing about 60 the whole way home

That sounds like what my dad use to tell me were signs of the tranny going bad. He use to specialize in rebuilding transmissions. I'll ask him Chris just to see what he thinks/says.

Thanks Chris. I really appreciate that. I'm expecting somewhere in the 2k range I'd say.

Now that this has happened, I am wanting to get into my m3 sooner than ever. ughhh

Does each gear have it's own set of bands? I was thinking a shift solenoid that might be assigned for 5th might be going out?

I did read something about one of the solenoids going out on a thread on here. Not sure about if each gear has it's own bands, but I'm hoping for the best. Either way, they are going to have to pull the transmission which is a boat load of $ in itself due to the amount of labor

Our tranny has 2 bands and they are applied depending on which gear you are in. For a tranny rebuild you prob looking around 2K. Reason its a lil pricey and what some people dont really understand is that you just cant pull out 5th gear and rebuild it, just to get to 5th gear you have to disasseble the entire transmission so a lot of the price goes into labor and they have to warranty the work too.

If he hasn't burnt up the bands and if it's a solenoid, he might be able to get away with the shop just removing the valve body and replacing the solenoid.
