For most of us (including me) most of our crafty work to our cars is being displayed on the local highways and roads (also YouTube) which means long gears would be perfect….
So why does everyone want short gears again?

Sorry didn't mean to thread jack... Nice write up by the way. I just want to understand why members are doing this mod.
The reason is torque multiplication. On an NA motor, the deeper gears will get you into the powerband quicker and pull through it a bit quicker as well. Both the 6MT and 5AT can use slightly more gear for optimal acceleration, though, they do come from the factory with pretty decent gearing compared to most cars on the market. These motors can rev decently (power to 6400-6700rpms), so they can benefit from a deeper gear under most situations.

Not all of us want the headaches of a boosted VQ motor nor be need all that power. I've had more powerful cars in the past and I've come to learn lower 14-second and 13-second cars are plenty fast to be enjoyable both on the street and in racing.

Yes plus I did it at the plug m47 or something so it's completely reversible.

And about the topic I completely agree with Tollboothwilley. A higher FD (shorter gears) is all good as long as you have traction !

you mean shortergear good as long as you have traction...

taller gear FI, shorter gears NA... for FI its not just traction that is an issue though - they run out of gear real fast (some cant even really use first gear with too shot a fd)....

Everyone wants to get into the upper RPM's quicker...thats where our powerband is. Just need to have traction, thats all.

there have been several reports of FI trying shorter gears... they all say first gear flies though rmp so fast its a detriment - they dont even spend any time in first... a few have said 1st and 2nd...

At the drag strip traction can be addressed with drag radials...

^^ what type of FI? what size tires?

I think that you could throw some 295 (9-9.5" wide rims) on the rears and be able to be just fine with a Vortech setup and 3.7 (for 5AT)

a 3.7 may be good enough for traction with right tires FI, but most if not all go 3.9 or 4.08 FI or not. I only know of auto Gs and Zs getting the 3.7fd.

To be honest I didn't know there was a 3.7 available until maybe a 2-3yrs months ago. I only knew 3.3, 3.5, 3.9 and now recently 4.08. OCG35 has the 3.7 and at the time Rookie had it in his TT FX which he let me take down the 1/4 mile. I think he has the 3.9 now.

with the right tires traction is possible in just about any circumstance...

of course...thats why setup is important. I think down the road I might go with a Vortech. Who knows? If I do, I will still keep my 3.5 FD and just get wider tire/rim setup if need be. A true LSD will give you much better traction as well

With a centrifugal blower like a Vortech, the gears would work perfectly. With centrifugal blowers, the powerband is linear and keeps gaining as RPM increases. There isn't a huge surge in HP or TQ like you'd find on a turbo motor. With turbos, the midrange (sometimes low end) power is significantly increased, therefore, a turbo doesn't need as much torque multiplication (ie gearing) to create maximum acceleration.

IMO, a centrifugal blower is a far better overall performance setup, though it might be slower.

- The power is more linear and controllable. Boost doesn't come on like a sledgehammer and risk unbalancing the car. It's just a more tractable power band.

- It's far easier to tune because power doesn't ramp up extremely fast.

- It's generally just easier on the motor.

- Easy to install

- Generally easy to fix and bypass, if needed
