What? On a lift and with a tranny jack, swapping this thing in shouldn't take a tech any longer than 1.5 hours. That's a crazy hourly rate.

it was a rough est, he said most likely lower... he just wanted me to know "worse case" in case of complications. they also warranty all parts to come out of their shop.

$400 is about what it costs to install the actual gear set... just swapping pumpkins should be quite a bit cheaper...

when are you doing it Mark?

Wow. If you have to pay that much for the install, then you're getting ripped off. I hope he doesn't try to charge you that much.

not sure when i'll have time to get it done, he still has to have his tech check out this thread. i'm guessing he thinks the mods to make it fit are more than they are. so what do you guys think a fair price is?

oh, yours is a 3.7 from a 37 right?... if that's the case I'm not sure what (if any) special considerations need to be made...

But 3.5 shouldn't be a big deal... $200 - $250 maybe? Whats the shop's hourly rate?...

Probably depends how much time he needs to take to swap the input flange. After that, it's probably really straight forward. Hopefully he's just overestimating to prevent undercutting himself. 2 hours @ $75 and hour at the most?

^^^ I used $75 per hr too - but calculated 3 hrs (error on the high side)...

so $150 on the low end (if there are no problems and they are swift) to $250 (giving leeway to higher shop rate and potential additional time from delays)...

If he could get his hands on an G35 input flange (or whatever it's called), he could probably do that himself and then just ask the mechanic to do the actual swap.

I'm actually looking around for a spare diff that I can raid the input flange, axles and rear diff cover from.

Here is my "guesstimate" from what I remember and if we assume I did it in my own garage without a lift but with at least the right tools (a puller and an angle grinder or similar to cut the shaft).

0- Drain oil from "old" diff ~5-10 min.
1- disconnect driving shaft (four bolts) 10 min.
2- disconnect both axles (twelve bolts) 30 min.
3- disconnect breathing tube and abs sensors ~ 2 min.
4- remove pumpkin (two bolts + 1 nut) 10 min.
5- remove and pull flange from "old" diff (1 nut + puller) 5 min
6- remove and pull flange from "new" diff (1 nut + puller) 5 min
7- swap the "dust cover". It is kind of press fit and quite simple to swap 5-10 min
8- install the 03 flange on the "new" diff (one bolt) 5 min
9- cut input shaft (angle grinder with cutting wheel) 2 min
10- reinstall the new diff following steps 4,3,2,1 ~ 52 min
11- put oil in the new diff 10 min
12- DRIVE !!!

I did took my time so as you can see it should take at most 2.5 hours (175-200$).

You can also note that swapping flanges is really easy 15 minutes at most and that's including time to figure how to swap the dust covers.

Don't forget to give your comments once done

Ya, I would figure 2 hours of labor for a mechanic. With a lift and everything it should be pretty damn quick.
