Re: Manumatic
I asked this when we got our G.
It's not the best automanual but it's OK.
The number indicated is the highest gear it will shift to. When accelerating, it'll hold the gear until you shift. This means higher revs, a little more speed and when going to the next gear it'll be a little higher in the rev range. This is important for engines with average torque.
On engine braking- it's pretty worthless. The shift is too slow and messes me up.
Downshifting for corners, I brake until get the revs down to downshift, drive thru the corner then powerout with the throttle. I'm in the proper gear to get the power.
I still need practice. The only time I get to drive hard is when I make an excuse to pick up the boy and I don't want to move baby seats.

Re: Manumatic
i almost always drop it into 3rd to pass on the street and also on the freeway depending on my speed. 3rd gear just seems to have the most torque. it's important that when you downshift, you do so at the right rpm or you'll be hurting the transmission/engine...the right rpms i cannot tell you b'c i do it by ear but i will also add that many people like to use downshifting as braking w/o hardly using the brakes (aka engine braking) which is also not that good. better to replace brake pads than a tranmission.

It's duke's thing. He finds old threads and tries to revive them for shock value or something.
One thing I do like about his efforts tho, is that i get to see how some of these well known issues became 'figured out' in the first place. I was a late-comer to this car, but wish it was on my radar sooner. This kind of stuff gives me a sort of 'historic value' on which I may not have otherwise had detailed info.
