Want lower gears = torque mulitplier down low
Hi all,
I've done a 3.45 in a BMW, and couldn't believe the difference in the low end torque vs. the stock 3.15 in that car.
Is there aftermarket gears available for our cars? If so, what's the stock gearing set at for a 6MT coupe vs. what's available from after market companies? I think this is a great way to get "safe" butt-o-meter "pull" down low, and hang with cars with more displacement....until getting to higher speeds.
Help, want lower gears - what's available?
Thx,
2BG'd

Lower gears(numerically higher) will get you in your power band quicker, but will compromise cruising rpms. This was a great mod on my vette with a 6spd with 5th and 6th gears being overdrive. A set of 4.10 gears really woke up the car and could still cruise at under 2000 rpms on the highway.
I don't think the G35 aftermarket has anything available just yet, could be wrong though.

lighter wheels wont increase torque...
You are right they will increase acceleration somewhat, but due to less unsprung weight... definitely not to the extent of a 4.10 as you said lol

You should probably research the different final drive ratios for other Nissan/Infiniti products. You might find a higher (numerically) gear ratio that would swap right in and give you the off-the-line torque that you're after.
Or check the 350Z forums.... those guys would probably be more likely to be considering a ring and pinion swap.

smcallis,
You won't see a HP or TQ increase by changing gear ratios. But you will see quicker acceleration (especially at lower speeds) and a slower top speed. It's all in the gearing.
Personally, I think the car is geared just about right. Good pull of the line, and still pulls well at higher speeds.

Right. You can't see an HP increase at a given RPM without a TQ increase as well. It's a strictly mathematical relationship between the two.
HP = (TQ * RPM) / 5252
However, if there's less mass in the wheels it's trying to spin, it takes less power to spin them faster.

Doh...you guys are right. Its only acceleration. I must've been suffering from rectal/cranial inversion syndrome.
Torque = Inertia * Angular acceleration. Torque is constant. Reduce the inertia (wheels) and the angular acceleration must go up. Since linear acceleration is proportional to the angular acceleration by the wheel radius then linear acceleration increases as well.

ok, when you guys with the coupes do this, I will hold on to your viscous LSD differential for you so it doesn't take up your shelf space
Oh wait then I will have to install it to keep it lubricated and clean as my garage has lots of sand in the air. grin
