2005 G35 sedan, 6spd, 29k miles.

Since about 3-4 months ago I’ve been getting fuel detonation (pinging) under low rpm/loads. It’s not doing it under WOT or at high rpm’s. It’s only on the bottom end and when I lug the car (short shifting, part throttle acceleration) around.

I always use 93 octane fuels from Chevron, Shell or Exxon. I’ve put Techron cleaner in my car 3 times to see if something was clogged/dirty in my fuel system somewhere but that has not done anything.

I have a Stillen exhaust on the car but it’s been on since about 3k miles so this isn’t an issue. I changed the air filter out a month or so ago in case the small amount of dirt that was on it had some effect.

Would resetting the ECU fix this? Has anyone had this issue? If so, what was the fix?

Unfortunately the octane stickers on pumps are a marketing tool. Pipeline have general specifications but the real test are only done at refineries by sampling the stream [ocassionally]. The sticker average doesn't give you the Motor Octane which is germaine to modern engines.

Are you using E10 [ethanol blend]?

As a test try BG44k as this has 4x more detergents by volume than Techron....if it improves this proves defective fuel creating deposits

 

Yeah we have the blended fuel here. I think it's a max of 10% by volume but that being said it's the same fuel I ran during the summer and didn't have this issue. Unless there is a different formula for us here in the winter?

I'll give BG44k a try. Can I get that at any local parts place?

I might have to go down to empty and go to my local speed shop and put 1/2 a tank of 104 in and see if the pinging issues go away. It's unleaded race fuel... not for performance gains but to see if the pinging goes away.

 

You might try having the dealership pull out the 2 degrees of timing, assuming you're car isn't already running at that.

Do you have an aftermarket intake or a modified stock intake?

 

My only "mod" is the exhaust. Even the air filter is OEM.

 

Almost every location in US get summer and winter blends to compensate for vapor pressure changes with ambient temperature............Sept 15 is usual change over date at refinery and Oct 1-15 at the fuel stations.

Normally it is converse with pinging starting in warm temperatures before fuel gets modified.

 

Okay... so would reseting the ECU help? I guess it couldn't hurt.
