advancing your timing by 3 degrees

I tested this on the dyno. It was a comparison of -2' and +2'. It didn't do anything unless 95+ octane gas was used.
The timing advance only advances the limit the ECU will allow. It doesn't necessarily (directly) advance the timing itself.
On 91 octane California dirt gasoline, the knock sensors are already limiting the timing up to a point. You can advance the ECU timing all day long but it won't do anything unless the gasoline will prevent knock.
If you have good gas in your area, it can make a difference.
Be happy if you don't live in Ca.

You can use a Consult-2 or UpRev's Cipher to bump the timing up to two degrees. As Tony said, it is not a magical increase in horsepower.
I tried it on my G35 Coupe with 93 octane while it was attached to a dyno and it did not make any difference. I drove my car with it and without it and it did not make any difference.
Getting a tune using Osiris made a difference.
Getting a Haltech and having it tuned on a dyno made a difference.
