I think my G is DEAD
I think my G is DEAD
Today I was driving my 6mt g35.. a little hard.. and while i was driving i began to hear a nasty cranking noise when i hit the gas. I was scared , but kept driving, then suddenly it got very loud and i felt some rumbling underneath then my car just stopped and my hood was smoking like crazy.. the thermometer said that it was 120 degees outside.. it was only like 75 but i guess it was because of the heat. It smelled terrible there was a lot of smoke. I was gonna cry can someone tell me what happend, and how the dealer should handle this and what might end up happening.
thanks

Did it sound like your engine was knocking before it died? Did you just had an oil change recently? Sounds like you ran out of oil. Check your dip stick and see if there are any oil left. See if the drain plug was put back on. If not go back to the place where you had it change and tell them they messed up your car. That sounds like a very expensive repair. Goodluck.

Murray...
Bad day huhh...... You may have run out of oil. You didn't see an oil pressure warning light come on? Or you may have overheated the engine due to lack of antifreeze.... Did you see what the water temperature was? No warning lights at all? There is obviously major engine damage...if in fact there was a lot of smoke and a burned smell.... Did you have any repairs done to it recently?

First off, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE OFF ANY MODS YOU CAN BEFORE TAKING IT TO THE SHOP. We all know how these B----rds try to weasel out of fixing our rides. Second, don't tell them you were driving it hard. "Oh I was comming back from the grocery store with the wife and kids, and all of a sudden it stopped" And lastly, keep us informed of what happend. Good luck!!!!

Don't cry. You're OK, and it could have been much worse.
Did anything notable happen before the onset of the nasty sounds? Any service work done very recently? New mod installations? Did you hit something on the road? Were you towing something behind? Did you install a CAI, and drive through deep standing water?
What color was the smoke? What did the smoke smell like? (Burning rubber, hot metal, ozone, what...?) Was smoke coming out of your exhaust, too? Was there something burning under the hood? Did you see any flames? Where?
Once the car stopped, was the battery/electric system still alive? Was there a puddle of engine fluid under your car? (What color?) Was there any debris, loose/broken parts, or deceased wildlife (!) in the engine bay?
I sure hope it's something minor, for your sake. Good luck.

Re: I think my G is DEAD
Nothing substantial happened prior to the nasty sound. Infiniti got back to me today and told me that I blew a piston and made a hole in the wall of the engine. THEY DONT WANT TO COVER UNDER THE WARRANTY. Why? They said that my last oil change was at approx. 4,000 miles, and i now have 11,081. I checked my oil last week with the dip stick they it was fine. What do i do? What is the price of a new engine?

How come you were not changing your oil at 3750 miles?

Thats bull$hit. Tell Infiniti that their MANUAL states that it should be changed at 7500 miles if driven moderately. It is within one of their recommended specs so the car should still be under warranty. Get a lawyer. It will be cheaper than paying $6000 plus labor for a new engine.
BTW, 4000 miles plus 7500 = approx. 11,500 miles so you were within the period where the warranty is still legit.

Well back in the day when my 98 Maxima VQ blew by water, the engine cost was $8000 itself. That was for a new Small block. The VQ35DE will be more expensive. I would figure around 10-12k. So I would definitely fight them.

Re: I think my G is DEAD
I wonder how many people never argue back with dealerships over warranty repairs. I bet the dealer tells every single person (who should be covered) that their car is not covered. If half of these people never argue it, then that's free money!

Re: I think my G is DEAD
Did you ever check your oil level after the 4K change? Burning through 4 qts. of oil in 7500 miles is excessive, but not unheard of with a new engine that is still breaking in. If you never checked the level, you were definitely 2.5-3 qts. down and that is not so good especially if you were really getting after it in the twisties (intermittent sucking air by the oil pickup). The reason for high capacity oil pans on road racing cars.
If you did have sufficient oil, then you detonated and poked the hole. That is due to some really bad gas or a clogged/partially clogged injector running that cylinder lean.
Either way, you need to be writing letters and doing some investigation by an independent repair shop. Getting some oil for anaysis is also a good idea. Anything supporting your case in court will be usefull. $10-12K is not chump change.
