Help: I just want to think I'm faster.

I need some input on what to do to hop up my G35c. I want it to feel faster not necessarily go faster. I just traded in my WRX so I've done the whole go to the track and embarrass mustangs thing. One thing I didn't like after hopping up the WRX was that I gave up a lot of low end torque for high end HP. With the G I just want to have more fun railing off of corners around town. It'd be nice to bolt on 25 HP so I can think I've broken the 300hp barrier, but not at the expense of low end torque, or loosing my nice quiet highway drivability. I’m plenty satisfied with the suspension the way it is, and I don’t care to spend $2000 just to shave a sorry .3 off my ¼ mile time.

Here’s what I want:

1. Meaner but not a whole lot louder exhaust sound.
2. More power for blasting out of corners.
3. Quiet inside when going 70 down the highway.

Here’s where I’ve been

1. Love the way the Nismo exhaust sounds, that and a Z-tube is all I ever need. Then I saw that they used the same product for the Z and the G and the tips don’t stick out as far as the stock tips. Can’t live with how that looks.

2. The Stillen exhaust sounds pretty mean, maybe that and a Z-tube will get me what I want. Then I read posts of people giving theirs up because they couldn’t deal with the sound level on the highway. I like that tame Italian like exhaust note, but I don’t want something that sounds aftermarket inside the car.

3. Factory exhaust, with test pipes or high flows, plenum, z-tube, and maybe ecu flash. Could take the stock sound up a couple notches to make it good enough for me and give the car a little more kick. Could also put all the power on the high end and loose some of that low end acceleration that I really want to keep. Could also sound raspy. I still don’t quite understand the whole story on hi-flow cats, test pipes, resonators… Could not do much at all without uncorking the rest of the exhaust system.

Anyway I know what to do if I just want to haul a$$, but not a lot of people here have talked about adding power and drivability. The whole reason I bought a G was because for me it was pretty close to perfect to start with. I just want to give it a little something extra so another G owner (and maybe only a G owner) can tell it’s not bone stock. Any input is appreciated.

Re: Help: I just want to think I'm faster.

Well after researching this this weekend I think what would be best for me is if I did the z-tube, K&N, Nismo exhaust (just can't get over how good that sounds) and ecu reflash. The caveat being that I'm going to have to be able to get an exhuast shop to extend the tips 2 inches to put them back in the stock position. If that's not possible, then I guess I'm back to square one.

Re: Help: I just want to think I'm faster.

if you really just want to THINK you're faster then Intake + Exhaust will make you happy enough. (I don't think you will need the ecu reflash thou, and it won't give you much with what you got)

but if you want to KNOW you are faster and just want a slightly deeper sound. get the Z-tube+plenum+hi-flow cats.
This will cost you same as an exhaust but give you more power for sure.
hi-flow cats will not be raspy at all with stock exhaust, but it will sound just a but deeper. This combo should give you anywhere from 15 to 20 rwhp and you will be able to feel it.

I haven't felt any loss in the low end, just a huge smile whenever I feel like giving the gas pedal some lov'ng

Which hi-flow cats do you recommend? How much are they? Also, when you say Plenum.... what the heck do you mean?? Pardon my ignorance here!

Re: Help: I just want to think I'm faster.

check out the product at Kinetix and Crawford

They both make plenums and hi-flow cats. A plenum is the intake manifold cover that sits just under your engine cover if you take that off. Do a search.

$700 for kinetix plenum+cats is a very good deal, but they are less reliable, but nobody has had any problems with their latest plenum yet.

so the choice is yours.

Try this.....buy yourself a nice Shoei of Ari Helmet and Simpson racing shoes.
Wear them when you want to feel fast.....you'll be safer too.
LOL

Yeah, while I'm at it I'll throw on a 200mph aluminum wing, and put neon lights under the car.

These cars are already so efficient it's just not worth $50-100/hp to hop them up more. I'd rather just do a few subtle things to make it my own and a little more fun to drive and enjoy it for what it is. I got a 66 Chevelle that I'll be putting a 502 in to take care of all that masculin BS, I just want my G to make me smile on the way to work. Which it does, but I can smile a little bigger.

I like that wing idea....LOL
Not much performance gains to be had by most bolt on mods. (except for Twin Turbo or Supercharger)
Money is better spent on cosmetic upgrades to personalize the car.
I have tried many different intake mods on my G...and went back to the stock air box.
I also think that the entire exhaust system is very good, and the only need to change out cats and y pipe is if you go FI.
I put the Greddy SP2 muffler on (no HP gains on Dyno...but almost 10lbs lighter than stock)...and it gounds GREAT! Nice rumble over 3K and the cost is low.
I put on a set of Volk wheels to make it mine.

Re: Help: I just want to think I'm faster.

Oooo! I think you nailed it with that SP2. I found three sound clips and I think it's perfect. $460-$510 seems a little high for a muffler, when you can get a whole cat back system from nismo or borla for $300 more (or less), but I'll bet if I change my mind and want to actually BE faster later I can add a y-pipe for $315 and have gains close to that of a cat back system.

I guess after that there's not much I can really do to make the car "feel" faster without actually making more power on the low end and it seems Infiniti just didn't leave us much of anywhere to go for that. Even cats and plennum I suspect wouldn't be felt on the low end so much.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Now I just need to find a durable baseball card to cram in between the spokes on my mountain bike.

If you keep looking, you can probably find a slightly used one.....someone wanting to go FI that tried it...
for less than $300.00. It is a really nice piece...no droning on the highway ...nice growl.
