Hard-wired Radar?

Has anyone hard-wired their radar detector? I have a passport 8500 x50 and am wondering if anyone has it wired. If so, any pics and/or suggestions? Difficulty? Thanx

Re: Hard-wired Radar?

Anybody know how they wired the ground wire from the radar detector? I have a V1 and am trying to to figure out how to ground the black wire from the direct power adapter without having to drill into sheet metal. Also, I'm going to tap into the center light console. Any pics would be helpful.

Re: Hard-wired Radar?

I tapped power from the driver's side lighter socket. There's a screw attached to a metal bracket nearby. I grounded on that. Works great.

Re: Hard-wired Radar?

Our cars have screws drilled into the metal from front to back. You can look behind any interior panel and see grounding screws. You shouldn't have to drill into your car for any small grounding jobs.

Re: Hard-wired Radar?

Russ, thanks. I'll try looking for a grounding screw. When I took off the center lighting console where the sun roof switch is at, I didn't find any grounding screws. Did you hard wire through the center console? If you did, is there a grounding screw nearby?

I believe this is EXACTLY what you're looking for. Speedaholic wrote a great DIY with PIX on how to hardwire the Escort 8500 x50. Just get the accessories for hardwiring for ~$30...
