Automatics burn oil?

Changed my oil over the weekend at 3000 miles(conventional oil) to check how bad my oil leak from the valve covers really is. I used the 5 qt oil jug to pour the used oil back into to measure the loss and was surprised to almost lose a quart. Turns out the leak was worse than I thought though I've never leaked oil on the pavement. A co-worker told me a lot was probably from the engine burning oil. I know the manuals have big oil consumption problems but I've never heard anything on the automatics.

G35 sedan w/ too much money in mods
It's a commonly discussed topic on here I'm surprised you haven't read about the 5AT's that have the same issue as the manual. My 05 auto burns a quart every 2000 miles at 140K. I switched back to conventional last oil change, curious to see if that changes anything.

Manual trans or Automatic has zero to do with oil burning...fact! Have your valve cover gasket replaced, only then will you know if you're having other issues. Once that's fixed check your oil level at least once a week, topping it off if necessary! Oil consumption (OC) is caused by cheap azz Chinese oil rings Nissan decided to use! Even the new GM LS motors are using a quart between changes and that's acceptable to them...not me!

That's the line most manufacturers are using now. Such consumption is "normal." My neighbor across the street got the same story from Subaru for his Forester with not so many miles....

There's only been a handful of the 50 or so vehicles I've owned in my life that DIDNT burn oil to some degree. It's the nature of the beast and you should always check your oil once per week (on a cold engine before starting in the morning). Yes the G35 ranks up there for the biggest consumer for me right now, a lot has to do with the rpm's the engine will see and manual downshifting (even with an automatic using DS mode) will make it even worse. The worst OC I've ever seen or heard about is my buddies new Maserati GT sport, it literally drinks a quart every 1k miles and it's perfectly normal...

6 speed G35 sedan
Pretty typical for VQ35s, especially the early ones. My first '02 Maxima used a quart every 1500-1800 miles, my 6 speed Maxima a quart every 3500 miles.

My '04 sedan is a 6 speed, use a quart every 6000 miles or so.

Burning oil or leaking oil? If it's not ending up on the ground it's being consumed by the motor and you need to start shopping for another one.
