05 G35 6MT with blown revup. Got a JDM DE (non-revup) ready to take its place.
In looking for a replacement ECU, of course I want a 2004.5 G35 6MT ECU, but those are so stinkin' rare. Can't find one. (Can't use an 05 G 6MT ECU because 05 6MT's are all revups. I'm putting in a non revup).
So I did A LOT of research. Read the ECU schematics inside and out. (As a EE, I'm pretty comfortable with the electrical side of things. Not an expert like some of you, but not out of my element).
Here is the 2005 G35 2WD schematic:
Since I couldn't find a 2004.5 G35 6MT ECU, I started looking at 350z schematics to see if they are compatible. I believe they are.
I put those green and orange dots in myself to give me a visual aid when checking every pin against the 2005 G35 ECU pinout. As you can see, the 2004.5 and 2005 350z pinouts are dead-on identical. I also took this connector view from the FSM and verified that it does indeed match all 4 vehicles in question. I also physically verified, with my own 2005 G35 harness, with my own eye *****, that this is correct. The unhighlighted pinholes are indeed blank.
So by now, I'm willing to assert very strongly that the 2004.5 and 2005 350z ECU will work with my 2005 G35 harness. The VVT connectors can just hang there - a non-revup ECU doesn't have pins for those anyway (8, 9, 53, 72).
MY QUESTION: I can't find a 2004.5 G35 ecu, but I AM able to find a 350z ECU. The only wildcard here, for me, is the ECU's connection on the CAN network (86 and 94). Just because all the pins will connect the ecu to the engine and car perfectly, doesn't mean the ecu will play nice with, say, the BCM (via CAN signaling). I will of course need to delete NATS on whatever ECU I find, but does it matter, on some other level, that the ECU I buy will NOT be from a G35 even though it's pin-compatible? Will it be as simple as buying a pin-compatible Z ECU and deleting NATS - and I'm done? Anyone with experience here?
