my belt driven fan was super loud, it sounded like a SUV driving around. I threw some grease on there and now its so much quieter... any lubricant should work. I could only throw it with my finger about 1/8th of a revolution (it would move over like one blade) and now it'll spin almost half way around or so. I'm sure it gave me a good HP gain, when i floored it before the fan was louder than the motor.
FYI, on hot days, the fan can be quite loud (truck-like in sound), however once out of 1st gear, the belt driven fan will disengage.

Andy,

Oh MAN.... I was wanting to piggyback along with you and do mine at the same time. I gotta have! So how much beer and BBQ is it going to cost me to have you direct my fan upgrade?

I talked with DaveO and based on that conversation did his dual fan direct wire, sequenial conversion on the wifey's sedan last month. It produced very similar results to what you have described. The results according to her, and she's not a car person, are that the car's getting better gas mileage and has more passing power.

The conversion cost me $210 for the fans, another $20 for extra brackets, wire, tape, stainless hardware, a six pack and about 4 hours of my time. Had I done the VSC conversion the cost would increased by about $100, another 6 pack and 1 or 2 more hours time.

Great to hear this mod is working out so well for those in the hot states. I am still running with only the aux electric and no belt driven. Been that way since January and even when things hit 90F up here, the coolant temp got only up to 3/4 while sitting in 0-10 MPH traffic. No pinging, or any other adverse symptoms. I guess the belt driven must really only be needed in areas above that.

I would not expect much peak dyno gains for this, but a nice boost from idle-3.5K will probably be noticed as that is where the clutch is still engaged. Above that, I think it allows enough slip to become insignificant. Dont get me wrong, I can definitely feel the difference with it removed or I would have put it back on. I just dont want someone to do a dyno, see the peak power unchanged and say "see, no gains, hahaaahhaa"!

We've found the dashboard's temperature gauge to be quite unresponsive. A 3/4 indication of coolant temp may be too hot for extended operation. Your engine oil and/or your ATF (if an auto) may be burned. Have you checked it for color and smell?

Just want to ask this before I forget. Has anyone tried just using the later model fans vs buying aftermarket? Seems like alot of the expense is tied up into the purchase of the fans themselves. I would think maybe a boneyard set of dual oem fans might work?
