blown piston rod

just got APS TT installed on stock motor at 7psi. 10 days later, on the freeway flooring it and at 85mph blew a piston rod and snapped it in half. it shot out the bottom of the block and blew a hole in it. i just bought a 350z engine because it was cheapest way to go(3000$ installed w/ 45,000miles). anyone else with problem before? i have a 2003.5 g35 sedan with 48,xxx miles.

Sorry to hear, I had the same thing happen to me. I was doing a 3rd gear run on the freeway (3 days after install) and boom.

Unfortunate but happens more on stock blocks even at low psi settings.

Curious what the AF and timing at when it blew. The engine should be able to handle 7psi very reliably if tuned correctly.

Who tuned it? Did you reflash the ECU to delete the advanced timing profile? What EMS are you running?

/\ dont need an ECU flash as long as you have a decent EMS that can control Fuel and Timing... I've been running my single close to 2 years now and still good...

Not necessarily true. I've had my kit 4yrs 9-10lbs, 34k, 400 rwhp and still going strong.

The bottom line is no stock block on boost is safe. Yes you may run storng from the what you feel but you will never know whats going on unless a complete tear down and inspeciton is done of the block. Countless members on the boards have blown there motors. No matter how much tuning is done on a stock block eventually something is bound to go wrong (may not be now but later, or not later but now).

To the OP, do you have specifics (A/F readings, dyno, EMS information)? Is your car a daily driver? Also for 3k you could have gotten a nice built short block to support that TT setup. It sucks but good luck with the repairs.

Very true... boosting on a stock block is like playing Russian roulette no matter what psi u are at.

I believe the OP was trying to find the cheapest and fastest way out and 3K for a complete motor and installed is a hella of a deal. I just hope it doesn't happen again (knock on wood). GL

I did not say it happened to all people who ran on stock blocks but it happens more to those that do, I have 3 friends who installed an APS TT on their stock blocks and all 3 blew...not necc. as quick as the OP's did but they did blow, I went with a built block and mine is doing fine after 50k miles.

Fatigue on the stock rods and other internals will happen no matter what psi you are pushing, they were never intended to handle FI, it is not always about how good your tune is and what AF you at.
