Yes. Especially dropping into 2nd doing ~50mph... Feels so good when its perfectly smooth.

I enjoy downshifting now that my rev-matches are spot on. Confidence goes through the rood when I know I can grab a gear when ever I want.

Drag the clutch in 1st for smooth starts?

I think I've found how to pull off in 1st smoothly at a moderate or "normal" pace. All these years, I've been trying to save my clutch by avoiding slipping. Problem is I was forgetting that you cannot avoid slipping in first from a stop. If you are stopped then your wheels are not turning and you will never be able to match engine and wheel speed.

Now what I do is I just let the clutch slip a little when starting off. The trick is to slip more than you would for any other gear, but not too much that you are damaging your clutch (heat and excessive wear). It is so tempting to not have the clutch engaged enough and then give more gas because you don't have power but then end up just grinding down the clutch more because more gas is irrelevant without adjusting the clutch.

Am I on point here?

Why does the engine take so long to drop RPMs so I can shift?

One thing I miss about my Celica is I could just bang through the gears so fast just like on my bike. On the G35, the only way to do this is with rough shifting. Basically by shifting before the RPMs drop enough.

Just saw a automatic G shifting and the needle was just flying down before gear change. Why is mine so slow? It's like cruising at 3k RPM, gas off, clutch in, RPM falling...RPM falling...RPM falling(CAN I SHIFT YET!?)...RPM falling...2k RPM...clutch out(FINALLY!), gas. My guess is it takes 2.5-3 seconds for the RPMs to drop by 1000.

What gives?

Heavy flywheel in our cars. Also the automatic has a torque converter which smooths things out considerably.

I think he is talking about quick shifting. The needle is slow to move, so if quick shift, it almost feels like I'm flat shifting having that lurching feeling. if I take my time I can be butter smooth... But who likes butter anyways..

More importantly, the engine takes to long to slow down(the needle just confirms this fact).

Well, I guess I kinda figured that the flywheel was the issue and there was nothing we can do about it. It's just I hoped there was something I'm missing. Quick shifting for me is very rewarding. It's almost like this big challenge to see how quickly and smoothly I can rip through the gears.

Here is the strange thing for me. For some reason I don't too much like the rough feeling we get from shifting with too high RPMs, but in other much more higher performance cars I do. My theory is that it's because in a 640HP car that initiatial jerk seems justified when you continue to be thrown back in the seat for an extended period of time as you accelerate. I think mentally I just think "I'm in a rocket...COOL!". In the G, it just becomes a bad shift. Don't get me wrong, we get pressed in the seat a bit too, but NOTHING like 640HP! Oh...and let's not forget the accompanying roar from the better engine. The G sounds nice and all, but it's no beast compared to some real sports cars.
