With a little finesse you can put it in first at almost any speed.

Sliq, yes you are lugging in second. I was just saying that you can do it.

I watched Jeremy on Top Gear take a ZO6 vette and start in 5th and go all the way to 160mph! 0-160mph in ONE GEAR!
I could have sworn reading a discussion on here about 1st not having a synchro, which is why you can't downshift to 1st without revmatching first. I know I can't put it into first going 10mph.

you dont need to rev match when downshifting to 1st when youre going like.. 2mph. rpms are too low

Same here. It's very balky at nearly any speed even with rev matching. I don't downshift to first until I'm stopped.

We have a lot of noobs here and a lot of self professed experts I suppose.

but with a synchro, you should be able to downshift to first at any speed(within 1st gear limits) and it should work. I can't physically put it into first at 10mph, so why isn't the synchro working in that situation? At 2mph, the engine revs are already pretty close to being synchronized, hence why you don't need to rev match. Thats not the situation I'm talking about

Hai, I do believe 1st is syncho meshed. Or you might have a hard time up shifting also. I could down shift into 1st on my old maxima.

Now I think reverse doesn't feature a synchro though.

I just want to know why I can't physically put it into first going 10mph without revmatching then if there is indeed a synchro

im not quite understanding how it works either. if the clutch is in, shouldnt
you be able to switch to ANY gear? for example, if you're going 90mph in 6th,
then you push in the clutch and keep it there, shouldnt you be able to
put the shifter into second(without letting go of the clutch of course )? im not too sure how that works, is it that the speed of the transmission
alone will not allow the shifter to go into 2nd, which only operates up to 60mph?

Rev matching makes it easier, but you should be able to put it in first by applying even pressure as you put it in first. You should hear the tranny come up to speed. as it slips in. HOWEVER, I don't recomend it because it is VERY hard on the syncros.

if u jam it into 2nd going 90mph it will go in put make sure u hold the clutch in or u will end up cleaning out the whole freeway and ur pistons.

Tex, u have never chirped 1st-2nd-3rd ever?

lol i would never even try that i just want to understand the concept.
hey texasscout, what do u mean by even pressure, i meant that with the
clutch PUSHED IN can u put the shifter into any gear no matter the speed, as long as u keep the clutch in of course,or else...

Honestly it's probably better if you can't. IMHO the differential in shaft speed might be too high to get a good downshift. But you would want to be rev matching your downshift anyway (ie.. heel/toe) because when you lift the clutch, you'll feel a huge lurch.

I meant, you have to give the gear train time you come up to speed. I really don't know if the G tranny will do it. I have only seen it done with an old 4 spd in a Chevy. It was full syncroed and so is the G tranny. Thererore it should work.

However, I wold NEVER try it.
