Ghetto lift your car?

I need to install an exhaust but don't have jackstands, a floor jack, and don't have mechanic friends who will let me use their garage.

Any suggestions how to lift the car for cheap and not die underneath it? Ramp suggestions that I can buy, etc? I don't think I will be under the car much besides this one time so hate to buy a floor jack and stands for one use.

Alternatively...could just take to a shop for install but would be fun to do myself and cheaper. I think it's $150 for install.

DO IT YOUR SELF.

Where are you? I drove mine up a steep drive way and up on the curb to do it. My back killed me after that. Then, I went out and bought an aluminum floor jack and aluminum stands- best investment. You will use them, trust me. Changing wheels, oil change, suspension, etc.

If you are near by I could help you.

A good jack and jackstands can be bought at Sears, etc. for less than $60-70 on a regular basis. Do a couple of oil changes, change out your exhaust, and rotate your tires once and they're paid for.

One of the best investments I've made since I bought my car.

Just invest the money you would pay for the install to do it correct yourself.

I could probably lift the car myself but only for a few minutes.

Is that enough time for you to install your exhaust?

Probably. If you drop it on me I have life insurance but you can't have a cut. Having never seen the underside of a car and adding a muffler bracket to get the 2003/2004 exhaust to fit a 2005, I might opt for shop install...

Can't you just buy a jack and stands?? If anything consider it an investment if you ever plan on working on other parts of the car.

Sears sells the stands and a jack for $50 or so. They sell 2 jack stands alone for $20.

for the price of wood and the work cutting it out, nailing it together, accounting for any errors, I'd say just go ahead and get the floorjack with stands optional. Its something you can use the rest of your life so better to go ahead and spend money now than spend it later and do without until.
